Can i ...just point out that i dont need you to point out to me what the rally is intended to be:P
I was just making the point that whereas some of our meets (such as Llanthony) are very much camping events (oooerr ;)) others are not. As such any negative response to a rallygoer choosing not to camp seems misplaced.

So which "meets" are not camping events?,
and we are now saying that taking the piss is a "negative response" and as such any "negative response"
to another club member will be misplaced and the post removed,
oh boy oh boy oh boy it just gets better

Just my two pennies worth, and bearing in mind I don't know what was contained in Jules' posting, but aren't we getting a little too PC nowadays??
Just for the record, apart from spam, I have deleted four postings.
- Two that I felt would offend the person the comments were being directly, either because they would not understand the sublety of the sarcasm (language) barrier the other being a fairly sexist remark to a female contributor.
- One that was racist and I took offence at
- One which had inapropriate images.
Ive edited Grahams post in the past at his request but I dont remember pulling any.
In general this forum is pretty good at moderating itself. I use other forums where there is obviously quite a friction between members, and I have had postings on car forums locked, because they did not approve of the modifications to my car I was planning (lowered springs), which was excessive.
Someone in work uses the "broken window" analogy quite often. If a house has one broken window and its not fixed, chances are people will think its ok to break the windows and soon all the windows will be broken. If I see something I think is wrong (broken window) I will fix it otherwise we will end up with a house full of broken windows.
I have no problem with micky/piss taking taking between forum regulars who know each other well, we do however need to be careful not to alienate less regular posters who we dont know and could easily mis-interpret micky-taking and take offence. Offending people achieves nothing.
I dont beleive I am being overly PC.

This discussion appears to be heading toward a Derridan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derrida) analysis of individual words and phrases.
The best thing is that it's given me the first reason to use the name of Jacques Derrida since I left university ;)

This is partly what brought the study of (post) structuralism and Derrida to mind, we seem now to be discussing what I meant by a "camping event". I was trying to make a distinction (which I will do again) between an event that was primarily about camping out (Llanthony) and an event that was about meeting up (the Annual).

On another note GC, are you sure that you're not misreading Derrida on this point. Surely the thrust of his argument was that meaning always remains hidden to some extent. Meaning, for Derrida is always subject to differance.
On reflection I sense that as a true post-structuralist Jules is merely pointing out as Derrida did, that the kernal of the deconstruction of your statement is to be found in the statement itself.

It's entirely likely. I have the works of Saussure, Derrida, Foucalt and Barthes all mixed up in my muddled mind.
I'll stick to Dickens quotes from now on... "It was the best of camping events and it was the worst of camping events" ('A Tale of Two Rallies')

Aha... the elusive meaning. I come at this from a literary theory background. For some there's the notion that 'the author is dead' - it doesn't matter what the author meant when he/she wrote it, what it means is what the reader thinks it means. For others there's the idea that words maintain immutable meanings - "What Shakepeare means when he says this is..."
The simple upshot of all this critical examination is what we probably all knew anyway, words are rarely neutral in their use and their meaning is not fixed.

I'll drink to that GC, it was all getting a bit highbrow for me - as far as I'm concerned Derrida makes helmets, Levi-Strauss fashions denim and Barthes played for Man United.

Surely this is all down to intent and effect ?
Whatever our intent when we place items on the forum , we have to be aware of the effects {potential or otherwise } on the audience .
Just common sense surely ?

Spot-on and to date the forum has moderated itself well. Its just that in this specific case my interpretation of the effect on the audience was different to jules.

Can someone tell me the definition of a philosopher, seems you need to think deep thoughts, but if you think lightweight thoughts does this disqualify you? It's just that because of my health I can't do manual labour anymore and I was wondering if this was something I could do. I just can't seem to find a job description for it.
