Title: Llanthony gathering ..
Post by: robG on November 23, 2008, 11:36:18 AM
Just a short note , chaps .

Well done to everyone who got to Llanthony. Did n't think I 'd be there , but glad I made the effort .Was n't there on the Friday , however Saturday night was just fine with a classic mix of beer , pickled eggs :o and some fine conversation and good laughs { at times hilarious ;D } .Totally relaxed and stress free , preceded by a fine ride to meet up with chums .

See you all next year , though all welcome at my place on morning of 28th December .{ Details to follow }

Rob .

Yep, what a hoot. I rolled up late Saturday morning after two setbacks:
Had to work late on Friday
Son #1 was ill on Saturday morning

However all worked out ok and we had an uproarious time in the Llanthony bar.

Great to see so many faces there. I hope everyone had as fine a ride home as I did.

I propose we do it all again on 20th-21st November 2009.

Andy, I'll mail your book back to you... sorry about forgetting to give it back this morning.

Good fun as always. Journey back was a bit nasty in places, big gusts of wind (and not the pickled egg related sort!)

No rush on the book. Finish it if you got into it.  :)

Ditto ;D

Although I will finally have to do the steering head bearing as it is starting to feel quite unsafe  :-\ and in the filthy conditions coming home I was not my usual robust self.  ;)

Thanks for all the kickstart support everyone -  :-*

A big thanks to Julian for the finest campfire nosh and to Andy for a splendid predinner martini - stirred no shaken. (shaken would be a Manhatten)

Ditto that earlier ditto, a great laugh. ;D. Glad to see SteveD made it in the end and Terry and Andy too. (thanks for the Port, cheese & biscuits Andy) Much mirth and merryment in the pub along with quite a fine supper of Jerky, pork pie, salami, chedders and an assortment of crisps.

Great ride home over the hills into Hay and off to Monmouth via the B roads before dropping in on my parents at Chepstow for a cuppa.

Word to the wise though. If Jules tells you to pop something into your mouth and hold it there to savour the flavour before swallowing. DON'T!!! It's horrible and it burns too. :'( That's the last time I drink Chilli vodka!! :o

Cheers guys, a great meet 8)

Great to see the boys in good spirits, was a last minute thing for me but glad I made it. Very blustery on the way back, I expect a bit of neck ache tomorrow. Not too much rain and traffic OK. The wind around Birmingham was the worst and slowed me down quite a bit, I hate cross winds!
See Ya for the Dragon.

I nearly made it to the end last night, but of course Simon Morgan beat me to it. I don't know how much longer he stayed up after I crashed, but as he didn't get out of his tent until gone 10.30 this morning, I'd say it was very late indeed.

I have no idea how he does it...

Not really the Hairy Bikers but real Bikers none-the-less! Excellent weekend. Good to see everyone, plenty of laughs, too much beer and/or paint stripper.

Journey back cold and moist, but then it doesn't really matter on the way home.........

Jethro, when I left the site and I got down to the Hereford road how come you were coming up it, away from your direction to home?

As I slowly went whizzing past the turning....!!!
I decided to go the old Hereford road through Pantygelli, into Abergavenny and pop into the Bus Station.
Mainly to see if Claire, the Ex-Taffspeed mechanic who seems to be a regular was there to have a chat.

But as there was only 3 bikes, one being a large scooter I thought better of it.
I wasnt thinking...a bit cold, little moist,of course nobody would ride their Bike in that weather  ???

So I didnt stop and went home.

Bloody Good Weekend just the same.

Good to hear you all had a great weekend. I'd have loved to have seen some old faces and met some new (to me) ones. There seemed to be a fair bit of the dark stuff being downed mind, I thought you were mainly shandy drinkers  ;D

Remember the Peppered Vodka so kindly provided by Boyd.  He was kind enough to let me take it home after the gathering so, full of the spirit of experimentation, I took it to my 'local' in Llanddewi Brefi.  Jethro will remember the effect of my pickled Dorset Naga chili on Geoff there.  I proudly produced it at the bar and the landlady Yvonne pronounced "I just made some of that as well".  Needless to say the evening proceeded in an orgy of Chili Vodka tasting.

What are the odds on that ?

So next time I acquire some fresh Naga I will be producing some more.  The arms race is on.

Bloody good weekend mind.

So let me get this right . If I add chilli to vodka , I can drink it , right ?.

Reminds me of the time I added a load of apples and sugar to a very cheap and nasty bottle of schnaps provided by Jethro .
4 months later , we decanted the resulting liquid . Quite nice , however the real bargain was the left over fruit . Oh yes!
A couple of bowls of that , with custard of course and myself and the furry one were giggling like buffoons .{ there was a difference to normal , honest!}

I can recommend it .

Bought some chilli's , game on !

Jethro, thinking of some fruity gin type of stuff . Any requests?

I only ask as we are the only two daft enough to try the end result .

Boyd, I have to be honest Yvonnes had a nice red tinge to it and the kick was rather fiercer - how long did you marinade yours for ?

Needless to say I shall be making some now with the intention of kicking some a**e at the Dragon.  She also used several of her homegrown chilis.

One of my more senior colleagues (DCI) tried some and thoroughly enjoyed it when he had stopped choking.

Just used the last of our home grown chillies. Still there is always next year.

I must say, Boyd's was about the best i've had. Nice kick but nothing silly.

If you fancy a silly student game, try "person who drinks the last drop has to eat the chilli". It's amazing how dextorous (SP?) drunken hands can be pouring a tiny tiny drop, especially when you lost the previous game  :o

If you can get some cumquats and a container with a wide enough neck you can make a very nice curacao type liqueur. As per the chili vodka don't forget to vigorously prick the surface of the fruit first as the waxy skin resists penetration.

As regards to vodka I used Morrisons own brand as I'm sure the firey end result would be wasted on anything too expensive.

O.K. so stupid question. You need a bottle of cheapo vodka, some chillies(any particular ones?)Prick the outer skin and throw them in.Is it that simple? How long should you leave them in for?I did make some a few years ago but it tasted awful,is there any way of ensuring that it is at least drinkable?

Mmmmm !   Home made Peach Schnapps?
Could use dried Apricots now theres a thought....Or Dates OR Figgs as Christmas soon !

Just thinking out loud.

I think dates or figs may be too relaxed {!} .

Peaches sounds just fine . Returning to the chili , Boyd what is the ideal time to marinade said mixture ?

Looks like myself and trophy dave need some direction .
Can I also recommend a real ale called 'Black Death ' . I've forgotten the brewery . Jethro , can you assist or were you too busy looking for your top lip at the time ?

Rob .

Dave & Rob
The recipe I used was:

4 Lakeland Plastics 500ml. Fliptop Bottle = £8.00
2 1lt. Morrisons Vodka = £20.00
1 Packet Morrisons Birdseye Chilies = £1.00

Divide vodka between bottles.
Add two chilies (stabbed all over with fine pin).
Seal and leave for at least two weeks (Llanthony brew was for this time and was more than a little warm).

More chilies is bound to be hotter, but not sure how much difference extra time will make. Have two bottles made as Xmas presents that have been steeping for about six weeks (with three to go) so will report back as to their firepower

It is excellent with tomato juice as a spicey Bloody Mary..........

Experiment and Enjoy

If you are going to leave it for months, de-seed the chile. The seeds are poisonous (can't remember what sort) with the result anything tastes bad once they start to leech through.
