Fed up with my constantly breaking down SRX, I've splurged out and bought a brand new bike! No expense spared here, thinking of the rising cost of petrol etc, I got a YBR125. They are supposed to 120mpg or so. I should be picking it up this afternoon, once the insurance documents turn up (where is that postie?). Cant wait. ;D
This means I'll be able to assess the cost of repairing the SRX at my leisure. So far it needs
1. New starter clutch mechanism/ring gear
2. Closing throttle cable
3. Gearbox drive sprocket
4. Possible new carb diaphragm
The starter clutch mechanism aint gonna be cheap, nor easy to do. Not looking forward to doing that bit. Any tips on removing the alternator rotor without the correct Yamaha tools?

Well done matey. Enjoy ;D

Yes well done mate. 120mpg? Great stuff. I would think Yamaha dealers will be shifting a few of these bikes now.
-
120mpg is not to be sniffed at. Tyres and consumables would be relatively cheap as well. How far are you commuting on it ?
-
I'll be commuting my usual 12 miles to work (& 13 back) each day into Central London from deepest darkest Hackbridge in Soufff London. Its my usual route that takes in different roads to come home on than the ones I go to work on. Familiarity breeds contempt, as they say!
What will be interesting, other than the frugality of the fuel consumption, is how long it will take compared my SRX. Methinks there wont be much in it with the YBR marginally slower. Those traffic light GP starts to beat the next ones before red may prove too tough for my new 10bhp beast.

Interesting I have a 25 mile to route and 35 mile home route. The bike would probabaly cope, not sure I could though. 120mpg is tempting though
-
Yamaha have a 250 commuter that gets almost as good mileage, does 60-70 with ease and is dirt cheap. I'm thinking of selling up and buying an XT250.

I presume we are talking about the electric start?
I may have some bits for that.....we removed the starter mech complete from a 400e when we were using it in a track bike....not sure how many bits i have left
probably got a diaphragm hanging about too
front sprocket should be easy enough to get, you might need to measure the spline on the output shaft 'cos the 400's have a dizzying aray of different shaft sizes and spline measurements

Yeah, I remember my 12-mile commute from Woolwich to Victoria on my RXS100, it was okay going in at 4am but not such fun in traffic through the 'burbs on the way home, but it coped. That said HC's new bike should have much better performance and "presence" on the road. The ideal London commuter I would think.

Must admit I thought of dropping some cc's and saving some fuel for my commuter bike, but just didn't fancy 55-60 MPH on the M4 :o
-
recently i was working near parliament hill (north east part of central london).
on the cub90 it took almost exactly the same ammount of time as on the cbr600.
in london its the traffic lights that decide the journey time not the horse power, even at 3am journies are only 15% quicker than 8am.
i have to admit i do look at cg125's and xr125's as an alternative to the cub. my mates cg125 gets 115mpg, compared to my 125mpg.
i'd prefer the couple less mpg and a proper bike.

Steve, it is the electric start model. Methinks we need to talk! My gearbox sprocket has 3GV 17 written on it, and yes, the 17 is the number of teeth its supposed to have (14.5 at last count - oops).

Nice one.
No thoughts of a Bullet Diesel then :P
