Title: Plywood bending

Hi All

Nowt to do with thumpers - unless I am looking to make a plywood chassis....

Bending plywood so it holds its shape - rather than bending round formers.  Can I do this likie 'normal' wood with a load of steam / ammonia / heat, or do I need to laminate the part from thin single ply?

Looking to make a wooden bike 'guard and it needs to follow a shallow S shape.

I suggest you make by gluing up thin veneer into the shape you want rather than try bending an already formed flat sheet of ply. The glue used in the construction of the sheet will not want to allow any movement between layers of veneer.

Have a look at boat-building websites and do a search using the keywords 'tortured plywood' (No, I'm not joking).

If you have two planes to the shape then you can use the one to force a curve (or even a double curve) on the other.

Note, thats a regional method, very popular around Woddington, Farnsborough and Biggen.

If you google it don't forget the PLY bit. For Tortured Wood you get some sort of iffy Mills and Boon links plus some you wouldn't want to open at work  :o
