HI
My router died today in use - blew the fuse. I have pulled it apart and cannot see anything untoward. If I put in a new fuse it kicks into life then blows the fuse. Any thoughts on testing the coils etc?

Aye Rog,
Brushes knacked and/or gaps filled with carbon on the commutater. Clean with meths or brake cleaner. Watch out for lacquer removal. Call a Bosch Service Agent!

Bills advice is good and probably on the mark, another item could be the power cord being damaged internally.
If all else fails have it properly tested for earth leaks. It may be cheaper to replace it than fixing it if the coils are shot.
PS I usually run a pin down the gaps in the commutator as well as meths. they really fill up with carbon, as Bill said.

Replace the fuse with a nail/rolled up fag packet foil/Stanley knife blade/nicely machined but 3mm thick lump of bar etc. :o
No actually, don't do that, it'll be horribly unsafe as I did actually point out on all the occasions I've found the above :o
One nail-fuse was on a Fire engine which in my mind made it worse still :-X
As Rog and Bill say, clean it out, take a good look for chafed wires, bad connections and so on while you are at it and if that doesn't reveal the culprit you are looking at fitting bits anyway, so you might as well let a service centre with a tester do a full check.

I remember that British Wiring Harness Smoke auction... it was an Ebay classic, made funnier by the superb humour of the questions that got asked (and the equally pithy replies).
Another Ebay classic was that XBR badged as a Hurley-Pugh, I wish I'd saved the details now :(
