Getting a little stutter in the mid range throttle position. Tick over's fine as is higher revs, it's just around the 3.5-4k mark and never prolonged.
Don't think it's electrical (rain soaked commute down the motorway and the problem will disappear when the rev's get up anyway), I'm guessing carb clean-out is my first port of call.
Anyone agree??
(just thought I'd check cos it's a bugger getting the little darling out and I wouldn't want to shed my knuckle skin for nothing ;))

When did you last replace the air filter ? And is the choke stuck open

Air filter is a K&N and should only need cleaning which was done 2-3 months ago. As for the choke, I don't think so as I tend to have her off choke quite quickly and before I pull off. She has always warmed up fast and there is no noticable differance in her start up routine (or idling come to that) just this little 'miss' every now and then.

So the tickover drops when you turn the choke off ?

Yep, and settles nice and smoothly @ 1500RPM ;D

Stutter at constant throttle or when accelerating. ?. If it were me I would pull out the air filter, replace the cover and go for a quick spin. If it still stutters then I'd clean the carb and check the needle and diaphragm (has it got one?)

New plug, clean fuel filters/system, spray WD40 on carb mounts for leaks! Busy weekend sunshine ;D

Drained off the float bowl last night to get some clues and there was some small bits of detrius there so it's good bye knuckle skin, hello pain and frustration :'(

Did the deed this weekend, apparently against Dolly's will judging by the fight she put up, and the bloody stutter's still there!
I'm starting to think this might be electrical after all. After my weekend efforts, things have dramatically improved with regard to pick-up and throttle response (more to do with cable adjustment me thinks) but she still misses a beat every now and then. I have noticed that it seems to appear in the early stages of a journey only (or at least today it did) so could it be a damp issue??
Any other ideas chaps?? With such an intermitant fault, what's the best way to diagnose it??

Are you sure you havent over-oiled the filter. Try a brief run without out, but with the air box cover on. Did you try Bill suggestion of spraying the inlet rubber with WD40 to check for leaks ?

You said you have a K+N, are a cotton type material sandwiched between a wire mesh. It is 'oiled' so that any particles going through the filter stick to the oil and dont enter the engine. When new they are red, when older not so red. If you cleaned it you should have re-oiled it, which is easy to do, and will make the bike run rich

Get the engine warm and ticking over, spray the inlet manifolds with a good covering of WD40. If the tickover chages than you have a leak. Whats happening is the WD40 gets sucked into the gaps and temporarily blocks them, altering the amount of air entering and hence the tickover.
For obvious reasons dont try it when riding along.

This should have read
If you cleaned it you should have re-oiled it, it is very easy to over oil it, and this will make the bike run rich
