Here's my winter project which landed today.

It's just to get me out of the house and from under the wife's feet over the winter when I can't be riding as much or doing other things I normally do in the warmer months really Michael.
My mechanical abilities are somewhat limited so initially it will be just to smarten it up, change corroded fasteners make sure it's got a good chance of passing an MOT etc.
The PO has had it about 12 years but the last MOT ran out 2 years ago so it's been stood.
He's done some work : new tyres, chain and sprockets, painted the wheels, tank and frame, recovered the seat, changed the oil and filter etc.
It seems to run OK. Most but not quite all of the electrics are working-I'm hoping just a couple of bulbs are blown! This model like many of its contemporary Hondas suffer with reg /rect failure as I found out to my cost on my VFR750 and Hornet 600 so I'll need to check it's charging.
I need to check the brakes are OK, fix a leaking oil seal on the forks (not a good track record here I'm afraid but I can ask my mechanic mate to look at anything I can't confidently tackle).
I've tried for a 3rd time to sell my GPZ on Ebay as I need the space to accomodate the new bike really.

Have started it up but only ridden up and down our small drive.
Red line is at around 14K so it won't be a thumper!
After quite a few twins and singles recently I fancied a 3 or 4 but triples are generally expensive, except the early Hinkley triumphs which are a bit too heavy for me nowadays.

There's fun to be had at 14k, so long as the thing revs freely up to it.
A thumper? Well, given that things are relative, compared to my electric frankenscoot with its copper windings and magic lithium dust, it's defo a thumper 😂😂😂

I had a CB400 "The BIG One!" a few years ago and really didn't get on with it. It too had a stratospheric red line and was completely gutless below 6K or so. It didn't suit my style - if I can be said to have one - at all. But best of luck with it Martin.

One step backwards today-electrical issues...
The loom is showing its 36 years of age with evidence of butchery..
The indicators and horn have packed up but the battery charged in double quick time. Fuses are all OK.
Engine now running on only 2-3 cylinders but the fuel is old and stale.
Attempts to undo the float bowl drains unsuccessful due to poor access-frame rails very close. At least there's no fuel leaking from the carbs.
A dodgy replacement Chinese fuel pump has been fitted. It looks super shiny but who knows what lurks inside?
Don't you just love these projects!
And finally as it's a grey import some spares can be hard to track down but I'm in no rush.
Most manuals seem to be in Japanese too.

The PO alerted me to a Russian website for this model and there's quite a bit of stuff on there.
It's cleaning and polishing up quite well so I'm hopeful of a positive out come although it's still very early days.
Aiming as usual to try to keep costs down but we shall see.

All was going well, parts ordered from WE Moto: new fuel and air filters, fasteners etc.
Electrics 99% OK...
Putting it back together to check now running on all 4- one of the HT leads wasn't fully screwed in to the plug cap...
I can't say for sure whether this is an old or new problem but upon carefully tightening up the plug on the cylinder I discovered had been misfiring (number 2)the plug sheared in the head leaving the plug thread in the head!
Don't you just love projects....

I had recurrent problems with my 400 4 grey import which I finally tracked down(!) to an intermittent open circuit in a plug cap. It would start and run fine for a while then die - once on the M42/A435 roundabout which was quite scary till a kind chap on a 1950s Triumph shepherded me off to a layby. The problem is that if one cap fails it also disables the associated plug on the complementary cylinder as both fire at the same time. Or so I was told. Anyway a new cap fixed it.
If you need someone to remove the remains of your plug, Simon at Nametab Engineering round the corner from me in Redditch is very helpful and reasonably priced. No website but the number is 01527 60395.

I'm going to have a go at the plug thread with the aid of friends' in the first instance. I know worst case scenario is a head off job...but hope it won't come to that! Good to know of an engineer if I need one.
Interesting info about the plugs. Mine seemed to be running on 2 pots but then went on to 3 judging by the heat in the exhaust headers.
I then got the offending pot sparking externally at the plug.
I know the island you refer to. It's scary enough in the car. I used to have a mate who worked at Wythall station. We dabbled in Kawasaki triples so I was visiting him at work from time to time swapping parts etc.

With the help of mates we managed to get the old remaining plug thread out using an easy out and loads of releasing fluid and care.
We cleaned up the thread in the head and very carefully put in a new plug.
Using a remote fuel supply, lots of Easy Start and Redex we got in running on 4 pots :)

Good result, my experiences with easy outs have been very mixed and I'm always worried they'll break off and make the problem 10 times worse. I'm a great believer in easy start if a bike is initially reluctant - if it fires on that then it's a fuel issue, if not ignition. Usually.......

I too was dubious about using an easy out as my experiences with them until now have not been good.
I did give the offending thread a good soaking with release fluid and was encouraged by the help from my friends who have much more experience of these things than I do.
I found a very helpful You Tube video. I know these can often be misleading but on this occasion fortunately it worked.
And yes I agree (and so do my friends)we think it's a fuelling issue not ignition.
The fuel that I drained out was supposedly 2 years old.
I'm hoping with some use the carbs will be OK but again it's so common to have carb problems after a lay up that I'll be very lucky if the carbs don't have to be stripped and ultrasonically cleaned with some replacement service parts being changed. They may also need balancing.
Also going to fit new throttle cables as the action isn't smooth enough for my liking and they also look somewhat manky.
The clutch able has also snapped so this will be replaced too.
Fork seals have also been ordered.
Hopefully just the usual basics you would expect on an old bike.

Work on this project is progressing slowly. Not a problem as I have the time these days. With a very effective fan heater and music on tap I'm quite cosy in my workshop even in this cold weather. Could really do with a bike lift but I'd have room for less bikes then!
I'm still having problems with the spark plug thread as I'm not liking the amount of pressure that has to be exerted on the tool when tightening it up.
Working very carefully and with a small 3/8 drive ratchet via a spark plug socket deep into the recessed access hole I could only get less than half way into the thread using lots of WD40 before I sensed a repeat of the previous thread damage.
On the advice of a mate I've ordered a spark plug tap to run down the thread and hopefully clear it. Otherwise it'll have to be a time sert I'm advised.
I'm replacing corroded fasteners and have fitted a chrome horn to bling it up a bit.
I'm waiting for my friend to replace the fork seals after my own lack of success on the GPZ ones. I'll drop the fork legs when he's ready using my front and rear paddock stands.
There's a bit of painting and polishing to do, otherwise the finish isn't too bad. The PO painted the frame wheels and engine.
I'm not aiming for a show bike-just a tidy run around.
Tyres are newish and the dates stamped on are OK but both are losing pressure on a regular basis but I'm reluctant to have them taken off so as not to damage the wheel paint.
I'm not too sure how durable the finish of the paint will be. I've already had some fuel damage on the engine covers and frame when I was draining the tank.

Sounds like you’ve got a decent set up Martin, especially if you’re managing to keep warm in your workshop. Does it have kettle nice and handy, mine does, oh and a beer fridge 😁😉.
Best of luck with the plug thread, certainly wouldn’t want to knacker that up 😮

No I don't have the luxury of drinks on tap but the workshop / garage combo is very close to the house so it's not a problem.
I've currently got a DAB radio and a CD player in there. The cassette player(remember them?!)has just packed up but I'm in the process of upgrading the sound system. We've just replaced our modern CD amp / DAB unit with a new one so I'm going to instal the old unit in the workshop. It's Bluetooth enabled so I can also access Spotify via my phone so I should have most bases covered. I'll just need to upgrade the speakers to match-I'm watching quite a few on Fleabay. Not that I'll be playing it loud so as not to upset the neighbours or exacerbate my tinnitus! I can even dig out my old HiFi cassette deck from the loft if I need to.
The spark plug tap has arrived so I can hopefully get on with that job. The difficulty is going to get the tad securely fitted to the extension bars of my 3/8 drive socket. As you probably know the taps have a square end but a 9mm socket is too small and a 10mm socket too big. I've also tried some imp sizes to no avail.

Space is very limited down the very deeply recessed plug hole.
I don't know whether you ever changed the plugs on your similar model?
I tried fitting my small tap wrench with the tap in but even that was too big to go down in the plug hole and it was way too short anyway. There's very little room above the cam cover to manoeuvre a tool to turn it so you need quite a long extension to have sufficient room to be able to turn it.
This afternoon I went through my tools and was able to drill out (slightly) an old 9mm box spanner so I could hammer it on to the square shaped head of the tap. A bit of a bodge but it can via a 13mm socket be attached to several 3/8 drive socket extensions now to hopefully carefully drive the tap back and forth through the thread.
I haven't yet plucked up the courage to go any further!

I had quite a few mix tapes yes......There was a drama on TV recently with that title. It was set in the present but delved back into the 80's I think. Some of the music was quite good. It's those mixes I want to hear again.
My first cassette player was a small Philips device from my parents Christmas 1972 with 2 tapes : Led Zep 111 and Bowie's Ziggy Stardust albums. Not the same as a gatefold sleeve but at all not bad......
I still play vinyl as well. Nothing like it!
Spotify is brilliant-so much choice but I only dip in and out and don't use it enough to have a regular subscription-like commercial radio (or TV) I can't bear the stupid ads these days!
I've always listened to Sounds of the 70's on a Sunday afternoon on BBC Radio 2. Jonnie Walker and now Whispering Bob Harris.
In the week I listen to bits and pieces of radio 2 but can't stand too much inane chit chat...but it's good to hear a mix of all sorts.
I'm stuck largely in a prog rock 70's but I do like Radiohead and many others.......... 8)
Oh for the heady days of first hearing Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here and seeing the songs played live...........Genesis Live , before Peter Gabriel left and so on and on........

For all you groovy guys, try Greatest Hits Radio '60's, permanently 'ON' in my workshop! Alex Lester and an Irish "Rosco", along with Ken Bruce, whilst between 12 midday and 13:00, I think, tracks played off the vinyl. Yes, the ads get repetative, but with all the 60's tracks, I can cope with it.
Stihl hedge cutter, Record wood lathe, auction purchases, along with the Duke and that Morini the Minx refurbs all under way at present, plus a bit of genealogy and Sudoku/crosswords to try and keep the grey matter active.
No snow, but ruddy cold, but not as cold as in the Cairngorms, where it dropped to -18°C in one spot and -14°C to -15°C over quite a wide area, due to the snow on the ground, radiation frost, undisturbed air in a valley and no cloud cover for much of the night. Today was 2°C all day and thick mist coming in from the Tay! Yuck!

I'm afraid I'm with Pirsig on this one and prefer to avoid any distraction in the workshop. I even find I'm having the radio in the car off more often than on these days although that's perhaps more because I don't often do the big distances I used to.
But relaxing at home am very happy with any or all of Delta/Chicago blues, Hendrix, Clapton, Dylan etc. As long as there are guitars......

I now have access to all sorts in the daily driver which we've just acquired with one of those modern infotainment systems which can connect with most things but I'm old school and don't think there should be much if any means of distractions for the driver. It's a means of transport for goodness sake not a home! When I'm out in my sports car I prefer to listen to the sound of the engine and rarely listen to any music.

Just as a sheer coincidence, I was chatting to a friend of mine last night who had very recently completed a driver awareness course for speeding. He asked the teacher “what was the biggest cause of serious accidents in the uk, was it speeding”
Speeding was, I think he said 5th….. the number 1 cause of serious accidents were caused by undue care and attention.
Which I personally took it mainly being down to the amount of distractions now in a car.

Yes and I don't need to tell you lot on here but as bikers we are fully in the line of fire for the consequences.
I do wonder how much blame could be apportioned to the manufacturers - not that the motorcycle manufacturers seem any better now with their love of what I consider mostly stupid gimmicks that are not safety related............

After cleaning a new plug went in again mainly by hand with final tightening to nip it up when the washer had crushed slightly.
So it seems job done ;D.
I couldn't get the engine to fire this afternoon. I removed the airbox and squirted some East Start directly in to the carbs. It fired a couple of times but wouldn't run.

I forgot to connect the electrics back to the fuel pump. I discovered this when making some checks today.
It now seems to be running on all 4 cylinders.

Bike's back in one piece and running OK but subject to more testing. Airbox, bodywork and seat refitted. It looks quite presentable so I'm happy. Just fork seals to be done now.

Yes… it defo was Dianna Ross along with Nile Rodger’s…… 1980 if memory serves. Defo 80 or 81. I’d not been working long at the time when it came out.

The next job on the list is taking the wheels out to drop them off at my local bike shop (QB) to address the newish tyres which don't seem to hold pressure for even a few hours. The wheels seem to have been re-finished (quite well) at some stage. I've had a few days off recently due to having a minor op on my hand. The stitches are healing nicely now so I'll continue with the project while protecting my hand.

The whole op thing was surprisingly pain free. The NHS at its very best. It's an annoying little problem I reckon I've had for around 15 years or more. I didn't even have to wait long.
Next job on the project is to dismantle the riveted together OE fuel tap to fit a NRP diaphram repair kit hopefully to prevent future fuel leaks. Last week I discovered fuel had leaked out overnight and ruined my painted workshop floor grrrrrrrrrr. Why is it paint stripper doesn't seem to work nowadays but get some E5 fuel and it works as a treat!

Aye Martin,
If you need some paint stripper, I can recommend 'S.A.S. 5 Gasket and Paint Remover'. Spray can, that comes out foaming and lifts Honda/Yamaha powder coating, along with areas "touched up" with Hammerite and red lead primer/undercoat. So far it has been undefeated, when applied as instructed on the can and saves a lot of elbow grease, blasting costs. All parts need to be washed, with a good cleaner and then rinsed thoroughly, before re-finishing.
As for E5, it's the ethanol, a very good paint stripper and E10 is even better, but neither tackle powder coating, insofar as I have found.

That’s handy to know Bill, it took me an age to strip the Kawasaki KH125 tank I bought for the 250 tracker project. I used nitromors, certainly ain’t what it used to be that’s for sure🙄

With lots of help from mechanic friend the forks have now been stripped cleaned and assembled with new oil (over a litre would you believe) and seals and the fuel tap has been stripped re-threaded with screws instead of rivets and new seals so the next jobs will be to re-assemble and see how the thing runs.
I'll hopefully post some photos soon too.

All back together. Have just got to align the forks and tighten everything up.
Fingers crossed the engine will run properly and without fuel leaks. If not it will be carb strip time...

Before I post more photos does anyone have any idea why the posted photos have turned 90 degrees from their correct orientation please...? Bear in mind I'm not very tech savvy.

It may or may not help but I use a small program called JPEG lossless rotator to reorient pics before I upload them. Seems to work for me.

I had an issue with the front wheel spacers being fitted the wrong side but have now resolved this thankfully. I wondered why the front wheel wouldn't turn as I tightened up the spindle doh... I could have sworn the parts were put back on as they came off but it seems a senior moment may have struck again!

Something occurred to me regarding your photo orientation issue.
I would bet (50p) that the latest phones auto correct for orientation. If so your issue might be literally that you're holding the phone upside down. Dunno? So the master jpeg is upside down, but your phone screen presents it to you right way up......?

Having said that, I've just taken two landscape format photos, one deliberately upside down and they both show the right way up. Tried e mailing them to my address to see what happens. The result is that they both still show the right way up. So that test not conclusive, but it's not helping my theory 😫😪

The thing I’ve noticed, just to add even MORE confusion, is that both photos are upside down before I click to enlarge them. Once I do that, the first photo (with the bike built up) is enlarged the correct way up. However, the other photo (bike stripped down) is enlarged but still upside down 🙃 🤷???
By the way, I’m using an I pad to view the pics

Yes as Michael says, on my PC screen both miniature photos appear the wrong way up but when I click on the one of the re-assembled bike it corrects itself to the correct orientation?
And as Andrew surmises, yes photos were taken on my phone so I could have been holding it in the wrong orientation when it was taken.
Anyway I've now turned my attention to another fork job but again not a thumper. This time it's an oil change and fitment of some progressive springs to my 650 Interceptor. There's no drain plugs at the bottom of the legs as per the modern money saving trend so I've got to take both legs off to complete the work which is a pain.
I shan't bother posting any photos lol !!! ???

So I've finished the jobs on my Interceptor and I also decided to move the regulator / rectifier from the back of the engine to under the oil cooler using a kit containing mounting brackets and extended cables. Quite a job given my aching bones......Oh and this also involves getting rid of the stupid evap cartridge which sits in front of the RR.

Anyway moving back on to my 1989 Honda CB1 I put everything back together and the engine would start.
Carbs have been removed and sent to my mate for a strip inspection and rebuild .........

🤣🤣👍…. The problem is, when one turns the I pad upside down to look at the upside down photos in their correct orientation. They automatically flip around 🙄🤦???
We can still look suss them out though Martin, so keep them coming 👍

I've had 4 different seats on the Interceptor.
Haven't ridden it with this one yet but it's an OE RE alternative to the standard seat.
I must have an overly sensitive posterior Michael.

Back to the CB1 project now..............report has come in from my mate on the carbs : they are a mess but repairable. They're now in the parts washer and tomorrow the ultrasonic bath.
