I'm sure we all have our own views on this subject

Hmm, i'm thinking the laser blinder kit cost a fair packet, and he had 5 sets. probably far more than the odd speeding fine.
i prefer using the Mk1 eyeball, local knowledge, and a bit of common sense. works for me (most of the time, 3 tickets in 20 years, all when driving a car... far too alert on a bike to get caught ).
no sympathy for the guy, bloody merc drivers ... nearly as bad as the bmw shower :)

Interesting that he'd tried to say that he wasn't speeding at the time, so clearly he'd not upgraded to the SMART version that is active only when the prevailing speed limit is exceeded. I've no idea if such is available but no doubt they will be soon?

I also think he got what he deserved. For the same reasons that Steve posted, I think that being observant is the best protection, along with keeping speed limits which I do tend to to the exasperation of my wife. I have managed 52 years without a speeding ticket (that's tempting fate isn't it!) but have had a couple of near misses when I wasn't sure of the speed limit. I would have just accepted any penalty for those with good grace but must have been below the trigger speed.
I must also admit that my younger more foolish years were spent on much quieter roads without speed cameras.
Cheers,
Richard.

No sympathy from me either. I stick pretty much to speed limits, the reason being that if you are involved in a fatal accident and you were exceeding the speed limit, you are in very serious, potentially life ruining, trouble regardless of whether or not you think your speed was a contributory factor. That's just self interest, there's obviously a morality side to the argument as well...

Who... steady on there tiger. We have a merc. My daily drive is a Vauxhall vivaro van being a self employed plumber. My good lady wife's car is a merc estate which I do drive from time to time. Quite well might I add using the triptonic gear paddle 😉👍

Totally asking fir it. 5 cars, at least one is v fancy indeed, and the 6 systems…he can afford to pay fines easy, so hes just worried about points…ie he speeds loads, or already got caught once or twice.
What really hurts is the cost to the public purse. I dunno, £20K? £40k? How much do you price the whole palaver? And you and I funded it.
And now we will pay £2.5k/month for him to be in jail. Be much better if we confiscated some of his vehicles and sold them to recoup part of our costs. I bet he will appeal too.
