WHY, exhaust wrap? Does it give X more what? Or is it just a fad? :-\ ??? :-\

My best guess is a combination of fashion and rust! Isn't it supposed to make the exhaust run cooler or something? I asked my son who tunes cars for a living and he couldn't think of a reason.

The theory is that the exhaust runs hotter, but I'm not convinced it works.
I would use it to cover up a rough exhaust myself.

My V50 had had it before I bought it, ruining the look of its stainless exhausts. Cost a lot to have them polished (me being an idle sort of fellow).

I'm sure that the fad will pass. I don't think I have ever seen a "tidy" bit of exhaust bondage 😉

I'm going to go against the flow now and say it looks good on some machines - older Guzzis and BMWs for example. Air cooled lumps.

Some people would say that my Guzzi is "older". And exhaust wrap certainly didn't improve it.

put it on my innova and my katana, both have stainless pipes and it covers the shineyness, but best of all, the bit of the exhaust that on both burned the skin off my calf when i stopped now doesnt!
the whole helping to get rd of heat thing only really counts inside the bodywork of a fully faired bike or else under the bonnet of a car.

and there is some logic and truth behind th idea, although the practicalitys are somewhat hazy. from a flow point of view, a hot exhaust works better than a cold one, hotgas moves quicker than cold gas, and an exhaust that stays hot, expells its gases more efficiently than an unwrapped one that being exposed to the air is radiating heat outwards and thus is cooling its exhaust gasses as it is ridden along. so far, so good. in the heightened world of formula1, motogp, wtcc etc where everything is electronically monitored and recorded, theres probably a discernable difference between wrapped and unwrapped, certainly if you can keep the engine bay of a car or faired in engine of a bike cooler, then you can maintain power levels at high load, heat saps power on an engine and if you can spit the heat out of the back rather than have it near the engine radiator, fuel system etc, then thats a benefit. however.
i doubt that there are more than a handful of road riders on the planet who would be able to either tell the difference in performance or even notice if it was there or not, the benefits are at such an extreme end of the performance envelope that nobody will be riding that hard for that long on the road to notice any difference that there may or may not be. so its almost entirely a styling modification. in my case, my pipes are wrapped because im trying to build a completely black bike, to the extent that ive even used shrink wrap to cover the monsterously thick usd forks on my kat cos i didnt want them to be shiny even though theyre expensive hi tech sportsbike forks. so the wrap doubles up as both shine remover as well as leg skin/waterproof preserver! but theres nothing performance improving about it.

I'll often save a pic of a bike I like and checking back through, reveals only one with a good use of wrap IMO.

Yep, could have some fun on that.. but, it`s looking increasingly likely that we are going to move to Dumfries, our house will be on the market very soon. I don`t think I will be doing any more events this year. My 350 Honda that I bought just to sprint is now for sale, but, you never know, 2021 could be a possibility, just a long way to go to events and back.

Aye Rufus, congratulations on considering emigrating! ;) I have never regretted the move I made back in 1973.
The Scottish Borders will keep you entertained, I am sure. I used to live and work there myself.

Having a Scottish surname of a clan from the lowlands of Lanarkshire, I've often wondered about making such a move myself. How about promoting it to the club, Bill? Might end up with the TC Commune in your back garden!??

Just a note on the Topic. Wrapping the exhaust pipes ith asbestos was carried out many moons ago what early cars had there exhaust pipes on the outside of he cars. The reason for wrapping was twofold :- one to protect people from burning themselves and two it was shown to quieten the resonance in the front down pipes/manifold.

In the 80's i wrapped some manly spotter drag pipes, they were fine until it rained , when I stopped it dreamed like a lock for about 10 minutes. Probably wouldn't happen with most of these 'who's bikes ?
