XBR rear brake pulsing...
« on: March 04, 2019, 11:15:28 AM »
Hi folks.
Sorry if this subject has been previously covered, but has anybody found a satisfactory cure for the rear hub going oval problem on the XBR? I've chatted to a bloke who fixed a similar problem on some other bike by sticking emery cloth to his brake shoes and running the bike on a stand with the brake slightly on. Sounds like a bit of a temporary bodge to me. What do you reckon? Is it time to hunt down a replacement wheel?
Cheers

Evening Dave, welcome to the TC. Personally I'd start looking for a replacement wheel as the emery cloth thing although sounding quite inventive also does sound a tad bodge it scarper😉

Pulsing rear brake is a common problem on XBR's. Usually caused because water has got between the cast alloy hub and the steel drum liner which rusts and distorts the liner. Problem is that the steel liner is quite thin so skimming the hub may not be an option unless distortion is quite small. It is possible to have the old liner removed, the drum skimmed and a new liner fitted but I imagine it won't be cheap. If you go for a new rear wheel make sure you aren't buying the same problem - good XBR rear wheels are scarce. Check the rear drum first, shoes and action. Also make sure the drum is centralised - put it on the main stand with the back wheel off the floor, loosen the brake off a bit, loosen the wheel spindle so you have a little movement then spin the rear wheel by hand and put the rear brake on and then , with the brake pedal still pressed on, tighten the spindle nut.
Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

Comstar wheels are still relatively plentiful for the XBR but as Steve says any prospective wheel needs careful checking to ensure it's useable. I've had several high mileage XBRs and luckily have not yet had this problem.

Thanks folks. Yup, that's what I thought. I've had the bike 13 years so mustn't grumble. I was aware of the issue. I'm going to look out for a wheel but might try the bodge in the meantime. I guess I've nothing to lose.

Has anybody here looked at the possibility of swapping the wheels out for something else? Is that an option?

Cheers 👍

Aye DaveB,

Welcome to the forum.

May I suggest that you type 'Comstar wheels' into the 'Search' window in the top right of the forum window, when viewing the 'Bike Problems/Questions' theme?

The 'Search' result shows further information links about replacement wheels and possible alternatives.

I hope this helps.

My regards, Bill
