SRX caliper bleed nipple
« on: March 04, 2019, 09:21:26 AM »
I have 2 otherwise perfectly serviceable calipers ( 1 back, 1 front) with sheared off nipples, any suggestions on how to remove/replace them ?

The usual - heat to free, Plus Gas, left handed drill preferably in a bench drill. Easy outs if you don't mind the high risk of scrapping the whole thing.

I have heard of people drilling out and using helicoils but have no personal experience and not sure I'd be happy doing that for brake calipers.

Aye Steve,

Sorry to read that you are having problems with your nipples!  ;)

I agree with Ian's initial suggestions "The usual - heat to free, Plus Gas, left handed drill preferably in a bench drill." and then replace with a stainless steel nipple, touch of copper grease on the threads. Re-finish the caliper with some 'Plasti-cote', after thoroughly de-greasing, aluminium primer, paint, then lacquer in a warm environment! Your local 'The Range' stocks 'Plasti-cote'!  ;)

The latter operations may be difficult this week, with a northerly draft coming down from Spitzbergen onto the East Anglian shores!  ???

thanks for the suggestions Ian & Bill
I think the 'easy out' method, although feasable, may just leave the caliper a write off if the easy out shears (as so often seems to happen.
i shall be investigating the drill out and helicoil option, seen it done before on calipers, as long as the existing seat isn't damaged by the process it's fine....
local one man band clever engineer is about to be approached  ;), althoigh i have a pillar drill, i really don't have the means of clamping the caliper square and secure.
standby for the following disaster report ..  :D

yes Bill, icy blasts here but lovely sunny day.... swmbo'd well chuffed... washing dry already !.  :D
