Lubricants for tyre changing!

“Washing up liquid does contain a ‘salt’ but this is the active
ingredient and should not be confused with road salt.  There is
nothing in a washing-up liquid that will exacerbate corrosion –
there’s no sodium chloride salt to worry about. The issue regarding
corrosion is the ‘chloride’ bit of the salt. In ‘chloride nests’ at
the base of a corrosion pit, the chloride exists as hydrogen chloride,
which in damp conditions creates a solution of dilute hydrochloric
acid, and it’s this acid that does the damage.  You need to avoid
‘chloride’ from any and all sources, e.g. seawater, road grit and fish
& chips (but not washing up liquid). When I wash my aluminium bodied
Lea Francis, a dash of Fairy is just fine…”

I'm sure that's true. However, I have half a tub of proper tyre soap that I scrounged from my local friendly tyre fitters that will last me out. It works much better than washing up liquid in my experience although I can't say "the hands that change tyres can be soft as your face....."

Been de-greasing / cleaning my bikes for years with Fairy Liquid and never had a problem. Have used it to lubricate the plot when changing tyres as well-well i used to when i could be bothered to wrestle a tyre on and off. Now i take it to the bike shop.

Well I just use it for washing my hands after a hard days graft, works a treat 😁😁👍. Oh... and I then also smell absolutely lovely 🤣🤣..... cheers, Michael

After a 2 hour "All in wrestling session" on the workshop floor last evening, with tyre lubricant, 60cm tyre levers, Hiedenau tyres 2 - muggins 0.

So off to my friendly one man band workshop this morning. After much sucking of teeth, mounted the offending wheel assembly onto the pneumatic tyre changer and after some swearing to line tyre and valve up the deed was done and both tyres were fitted. Came home to finish the job off and it required 70psi, with plenty of Co-OP soap lube, to get the beads to 'pop' into place.

A bar of Co-Op green hand soap produced the best results, with a short stubby cheap paint brush, working up a good lather like an old shaving brush.

Wouldn't use Fairy liquid etc after my previous experiences of reducing a Borrani rim to a colander, after using the stuff to fit a tyre, many years ago.

I think Avon RoadRiders are going to be the tyres of choice from now on, when these are replaced. More flexibility in the side walls, a little more 'give' in the bead and a known quantity on the road.

Bill, talking of lubricants (keep it clean Steve  ), i have to 'dismount' the carbs on this ratty old srx, and i can't remember the name of the stuff you recommended for softening up the rubbers

No puckaterry up here bor! Jus got a motor, forks, swing arm and shock in a frame, with mine lendin a hand in the shud. 

Apologise if it is no quite roight, but I aven't spoken with my local mucker. He been carting 1 tonne fertiliser bags of firewood on the trailer, behind the Ural chair at a lollop along the rude. I will post an image on a fresh thread.

blimey, this 'original' armor all is as rare as hens teeth!!.... went into halfrauds, they stock armor all, but not 'original protectant',
checked with manufacturer was pointed to amazon.... only listing for 'original' was for a 10oz spray at £84 !!!
will be checking with local car parts supplier later. then get back to supplier and ask what the bu55er is happening here!

Aye Steve,

Whilst it may not be the 'original' formula, the 'Protectant' gloss and semi-matt products would likely be as good as the 'antique' 300ml bottle of 'original' formula that I have had for 30+ years and still have plenty remaining.

I suspect that the 'original' is a marketing tool used in other areas of the world e.g. Australasia!

KY Jelly.  Seriously.  Awesome stuff for rubber lube that won't rot your tyres or rims - for obvious reasons.  I carry some in my toolkit.
