SRX400 engine number
« on: January 08, 2019, 01:34:40 PM »
I'm currently trying to get a letter from Yamaha (UK) to confirm the power output of my 1991 SRX400 - this should be about 32bhp - so that it can be used to take an A2 driving test.

However, the number on both (I have a spare) my engines (one has an electric start) have the designator 5Y7 stamped on them.  Yamaha tell me that this number relates to a 1982 XT400 engine.

Can any of you good people shed a light on this please?  What is the designator for the SRX600 of similar vintage?

TIA

Aye Double Diamond,

A 1991 SRX400 engine is identified by the code '3VN' or '3VN' in front of the specific unit number, stamped into the ridged area on the upper rear right hand case.

A 1991 SRX600 engine is identified by the code '3SX', located as for the 400cc engine.

A 1991 SRX400 monoshock was sold with an electric starter. I believe (and stand to be corrected  :-\ ) that a monoshock fitted with a kickstart engine is a hybrid.

I too have a 1991 SRX400 monoshock fitted with an alternative engine that is a 1990 XT600E engine, with the engine prefix '3TB' that indicates that it is a 1990 engine.

For a full and comprehensive article upon model codes attributed to the SRX range of motorcycles, I would recommend reading this article: SRX_model_codes  I suggest that this website is worthy of a detailed view.

The following is a link to the Fowler's spare parts web list concerning the SRX400 model: Fowler's_SRX400_parts_list  Depending upon the model year selected, the relevant alpha-numeric code will be displayed.

I realise that this may raise more questions than it answers, but hope that it helps you in extracting the required letter from Yamaha (UK).

My regards, Bill

Hi.... as Bill has indicated... this is a bit of a minefield.... so let me muddy the waters a little further :-)..

i have 4 srx 400 engines under my bench , i have checked them and they are all 5Y7.... as far as i'm aware they are 1986-87.

my road going srx600 is 1986 and carries the 1JK stamp, which i think says it's a Japanese market model (grey import)

I also have an XT600 engine, date unknown stamped 8AJ

but i am now going to study the link Bill sent regarding SRX codes.... sounds like good bedtime reading

good luck
