Probably a Rediculous Idea
« on: March 11, 2018, 12:50:29 PM »
Yesterday I was at a very good classic car show in Dublin. As usual, a display of micro/bubble cars caught my eye. Got talking to the owner who I suspect is a famous Irish rally driver, and he gave me a leaflet for a classic micro car rally taking place in July 2018.
They are recreating the 1958 Liege - Brescia - Liege, 2000 miles rally which was held for small capacity cars. There are two classes,
Authentic; up to 500cc pre 1958
Spirit; up to 700cc pre 1969
So I looked at their route, not in any detail, at this stage, and it struck me. What a brilliant excuse for a Thumper trip over the Alpine passes and Dolomites etc.
Now, these guys are staying in good hotels, but there is nothing to stop us following the same route and camping. Also, they appear to be visiting some interesting museums and private collections. What's not to like  :)
There rally starts in Liege on 11 July, and finishes there on 22 July.
Their overnight stops are, Karlsruhe, Munich, Misurino, Ljubljana in Slovenia for two nights, Nova Levante, Brescia, Merano, Bernreid, Bretten, Liege.

Yep, that would make a great start point for the trip, as i believe it has camping. The whole idea is probably madness, but sure, aren't most ideas  :)

why go to urope? if theres an idea to start in the uk, why not do a uk based tour that takes in the home nations? europe is fabulous, but how about a trip that avoids crossing the channel and instad takes in cornwall, wales, hollyhead to ddublin, up to the north, across to stranraer, round scotland, down the east coast. id love to do a tour like that. i see the many routes through europe and they all look greeat, but have any of us really seen all that the uk has to offer?

Yes, there is loads I still want to see in the UK and Ireland, and there are all sorts of themes you could use, to end up in interesting places. One in my head, was to visit the highest point in every county in Ireland! However, my whole point in this instance, would be to actually follow the micro car rally, as travelling spectators, if you will  ;)

Tim... that's sounds like a brilliant idea and if I didn't have two sprogs (little darlings 😁) that need feeding every evening I'd be straight there with you on this one.....but alas I DO have a 9&11 year old to tuck up every night. So most likely I won't be able to join you. However please keep me posted via this thread and who knows things just might work out 🤞🤞
Cheers, Michael

i suppose you have got to like bubble cars for this then. im not really all that enthused about giving up my summer work leave to ride round after a bunch of folks in bubble cars. i like the idea of riding over the alps, but the drag down there would put me off, so, well, have fun doing that!

I quite like micro/bubble cars but I have lots of other motorcycle things on and am pretty sure my wife would have something to say about it, more relevant though is I should be doing my first sprint on the 15th July, don`t want to miss that..

Hi Tim, have a chat with Martin (Berkeley 3 wheeler) when he comes over to the Shepherds Rest meet, he's done the LBL before and is doing it again this year.

Had a great chat with Martin over the wknd about this Micro Car trip. He did the one ten years ago, for the 50th Anniversary, and reckons there are forty five cars booked in for this years. He is doing this years in a Vespa 400 car. I must admit I still fancy the idea  ;)

Hi Tim

You have no idea how much I'd love to do this trip! Roughly how much do you think it would cost all in with ferries etc and do you think my Enfield would be ok for the journey? I ask as money is tight and my 35 year old son has suddenly taken an interest in bikes after being a dedicated car man since 17 so I've given him my BMW.

Cheers Ian
