Bike transport
« on: May 16, 2017, 09:55:01 PM »
So here's one for you all to get your teeth into  :-\
Looks like I have a buyer for my XBR 600 special, however, he's in Northampton, and I'm in Antrim.
One option is that I take the bike on the ferry to Cairnryan, which will cost me £38 and come back as a foot passenger. But he has been quoted £250 to transport the bike from Cairnryan to Northampton! Which is a non starter.
I might even ride the bike down to Northampton, and fly home from Luton, just for the fun of it  :-\

Aye timbo,

The latter looks a good option. I don't have a van and not going sarf in the near future, so can't make an offer.

However, Cairnryan to Northampton is a 700 mile round trip with a 13 hour round trip travel time, if nobody throws it away on the A75/M6/M1 (you'll be lucky!  ::) ).

Minimum wage for a driver £8-00/hr = £104

Diesel for the van at £5-45/gallon and 35 mile/gallon = 20 gallons @ £5-45 = £109-00

So that's £213-00 and you haven't even paid for the van, insurance and road tax; yet!   :(

The £250 for a one off job is no bad.

Hope the sale goes through in your favour.

My regards, Bill

Aye Michael,

Sometimes. Whilst in other times, a civil servant trying to get things done, without being ripped off!

We all like a "good deal", but sometimes when I think something is "expensive", I sit down and just do a wee calculation only to find that if you are paying your taxes and employing others to do a job for you the price wasn't so expensive after all.

I'll no say anymore as this might turn into an alternative posting!  ;)  :-X

Trust you are still repairing bodily and enjoying the 390 at the same time.  :)

My regards, Bill

Yes Bill, your calculations put it into perspective. But its still too expensive, so I'm exploring other options  ;)

I had my Arrow delivered from Blackburn to the south of Brum for £100. Nice chap, with a proper van with bike clamps etc.

I'm sure he would be able to do something from the ferry port although you may have difficulty getting a suitable pick-up arrangement.

I've pm'd you contact details.

With living here on the IOM I have to get everything transported. There is a fella advertising locally who I`ve contacted in the past and the price he always gives is £250 from seemingly anywhere in the UK (mainland). Sometimes you have to wait a little while before he has two or three to bring over, to make it worth while for him. So, I think £250 is ok but obviously do nothing until the bike`s paid for or you have enough deposit to cover ALL your costs  ;)

Certainly not wanting to "hijack" Tims thread but just to answer Bills question, yes repairing pretty good now thanks. Arm still plays up from time to time but hey hoo, oh and I'm loving the ktm390, wot a cracking little bike that is. Done about 750 miles on it so far, so just nicely getting used to it.
Cheers, Michael

Sorry Ian, your PM never reached me.
Anyway, its all sorted now, as a professional bike transporter from NI is collecting the bike from my door, and delivering it to the new owner in Northampton for £200, with myself and the buyer splitting the cost. So its all worked out well, and he takes the bike on Monday   :)

Sorry Ian, your PM never reached me.

I wonder what happened to it?*

Never mind, £200 sounds like a good deal.

*For some reason it isn't in my sent messages. I probably quit before I pressed the appropriate button.

If all goes well, and once I have the details, (the buyer has arranged it), I will post in the recommended section. As this wee country of NI is full of bikes, and you never know, some thumpeteer on here might be interested in buying one sometime. Also if the guy travels from Cairnryan, he may be able to collect a bike in Britain, and deliver it to another place in Britain for a good price  ;)
Just for info, in NI, vehicles have a different reg to ones in Britain, but it is still a UK vehicle with a Swansea issued V5C, so no problems there. If it is a southern Irish bike, you will have to import it and declare it through the NOVA process with HMRC.
Also, in NI, our MOTs are done in government run centres, not by the local garage, but again they are still classed as UK MOTs, so again no problem. In the south they have still somehow managed to have a system were all motorcycles are exempt MOT, yet are part of the EU  :-\

Aye timbo,

I am surprised the fleet isn't registered in the South!  ;)

As for being in the EU, the old 'Animal Farm' adage of "Some are born more equal than others!" often applies.

As a passing shot and with the experience of "suspect" MoT certification, maybe we would have a more level MoT playing field if UK wide they were Government run.  :-\
