Brembo parts to replace Grimeca on a Skorpion
« on: April 02, 2007, 03:53:44 PM »
I know what you're all thinking, here we go again, probably right but I can't help it. So this time its brakes. My Skorpion has Grimica front and rear, the rear is a bit iffy and tends to bind a little and the front is a stop go switch with no subtlety at all, not a bit. So as I am informed that Brembo is the way forward I was wondering if any of you clever people might know what is interchangeable with what?

many thanks

Steffan

have you got any measurements? the one to start with is the distance between the centre of the two mounting bolts, and see how it goes from there. my skorpion felt exactly the same. my cb500 has a brembo front brake, twin pot and sliding caliper with a braided hose. it gives loads of feel and plenty of power and progression.

Why not fit a late R6 front end forks brakes and wheel ?
Upside downies here we come!!!!!
I have been told by someone in the know that they bolt straight in ................

Thanks for that!! R1 front end, now that's what I call the cheap option.... All I want is progessive feel and a power and a rear that doesn't bind. Is that too much to ask (voice breaking) is it? sob...

wanders off shaking his head

Try new seals then , It will sort the rear problem out ..for a tenner..

I haven't tried new seals in the front as yet , but remember it is a MZ / German tractor :)

Don't you know anyone with a SZR ?
They had Brembo brakes fitted , a few minuets with a tape measure might answer your question ?

I personally don't think it's the front caliper that's the problem !
More like the master cylinder ..... pumping to much fluid......

My rear master on my Skorpion blew a seal, so I upgraded to a 2003 GSXR750, and with some simple parts switching it now works much better.
If you want to add some sponginess to your front brake feel... substitute a rubber brake line.

The stock unit does not expand, but the rubber one will, and a simple swap may give you the feel you are looking for, without a lot of expensive flailing around.
Junkyards here almost give them away, so you will save a ton of bucks while you are at it.          Good luck.

Can also add spongeiness by bleeding a little air into the system..  The brembos on the V50 front end are solid, no feel but I think this is because they have a CX500 master cyl and this is the wrong dia

Come on guys! Spongyness is the opposite of what I have now and not what I am looking for. What I want is good braking power that comes on progressively. Anyway I now have a nice Brembo mastercylinder for the front and the back and I am only awaiting the calipers and then it's off to the races (figuratively speaking of course)

Hey Steve-

I've not had any problem with the skorp rear yet, but its probably in the post.

And whats the problem with the front??!  Ok, not got a lot of subtlety agreed, but it *does* stop!  I've never locked the front, but similarly I've never hadd the back off the deck either.

I'm sure it can be improved but i tend to just use 1 finger and its fine...

(says the man who ended up in the kitty litter!!):D

A rubber front line will make it more progressive.

Sponginess may have been the wrong word to choose... it implies lack of control.
There is nothing wrong with an expanding hydraulic hose, as long as it is structurally safe and sound, and gives you the feedback you prefer.

For instance, I like no power assist in my steering systems in my cars because of the feel, yet I prefer it in a larger truck.

That's what I was trying to say.  Plus, I like to innovate, save money, and get what I want anyway.... you know.

I have bikes with such good personal setups on the brakes, I wouldn't THINK of installing a steel or kevlar line on them, and other bikes that barely made it home before I had installed braided steel or kevlar lines..and maybe added a caliper and disc......it is very subjective and personal, and I was merely suggesting something that has successfullky worked for me.

Better to have twenty one thousand dollar vehicles than one twenty thousand dollar vehicle, and especially when you can turn a thousand dollar vehicle into a five thousand dollar vehicle.... that's where this old junkyard dog is coming from.

Good luck with it, in any case.               Jim

Dont know if the brakes are the same or different but the front Grimeca on the Mastiff has bags of feel and as Andy says it STOPS! :o (ask Pat, it has so much more front brake than a Domi that he struggled with it for the first wee while!) Oh and I find two fingers are enough mostly... (awaits finbar saunders noises off stage)

I'd look to making sure it is 100% before you throw money at fitting non standard brakes... what nick are the pistons in...?
