testing, testing!!
« on: March 27, 2007, 09:52:03 AM »
Hello,

I'm off up to mallory tomorrow afternoon to (hopefully) test the SRX. If anyone is in that neck of the woods and wants a cuppa in the old van then give me a shout.

This is, however, dependant on

a-   getting a place (shouldn't be a problem)
b-  getting the bike ready tonight (fairing cut outs for the bars)
c-  the bike not falling apart

Cheers,

andy

Classic racing at Pembrey on April 7th - 8th. Tempted to go, but there's also a camping trip proposed to Llanthoney.

Hmmmm...

We'll see :-)

Hello!

All was good.  Well not really, but it was ok.

Its the 620, road chassis.  Motor was fine, better than last year without the airbox.  Probably still not more than about 50 horses, but that ok for a wet behind the ears newbie like me.  Anyone heard from StevL??  I tried to drop him a line, but to no avail!  Maybe he can smell a blag coming on!!

The chassis however was awful  :)   Chattering like a b@st@rd first time out, both front and back.  At least the tyres are gripping!

So I backed off the preload on the back, and went back out.  Next I backed off the damping, on the basis that I thought it was ratcheting down over the bumps (ie. not dully returning).  So its on the lowest preload, and the 2nd lowest damping.

The forks were like pogo sticks, with very little damping.  I had just set them up as per standard FZR (10w oil), but examination of everyone else's bike soon showed what they should really be like.  So I'll put a greater volume of 20w oil in and test again.

As I softened the back, I found that I could get the front to behave. By gassing it in the corners.  As it lightens, it stops bouncing around.  I know this is pretty elementary, but it seemed like a nice practical demonstartion or the theory I've been reading (various books from "the greats", on how to be "a great"...)

I've already dropped the yokes 15mm, but think I'll drop them another 10mm, and probably turn the damper up a couple of notches.

BUT!  And this pleased me-

Rog- the plug you made for the decompresser was spot on- no oil leaks!
Boyd- the fairing brackets worked a treat, it didn't flap about (or crack) at all. In fact it even kissed down on the deck a wee bit

Once I get the chassis sorted, I may need some tyres.  And given the way the intermediates were going, I might invest in slicks.  But that also means having wets.  And that also means buying another set of wheels.....  Hmmmm.  Maybe just buy more intermediates!!  Or will try and fix the money-printing-machine I have stashed away in the loft.  Its been out of order for a while now...

Anyway, I'll try and test once more before Brands on the 14th.

Then:

Snetterton on May 6th & 7th  (tho I think there's qualifying, and its a European Supermono round)  Dunno if I would qualify...
Pembrey on 16th 17th June

Cheers!  Thanks for the support/interest/bits of metal!  (blag blag blag!)

Oh, now I mention it....!  I think I'd like to carry some replacement ally rearset plates, for spills.  If I supply a carboard cutout, could anyone maybe cut em out??  I'll pay for em, obviously, cos this prolly can't be made out of scrap...  Also gotta buy some cheap replacement levers too!  Would hate to miss a race for a stupid spill in practice.  Or worse, pay for a weekend (Snett weekend is 230 quid) and miss it all!

Catch you soon!  All the best

a

Hi Andy, it sounds like you were exploring the handling limits of the bike. I don't know what type rear units you have fitted but with the weight of the bike and pushing it hard on track you might need to stiffen them up some what.

I would steer clear of using slicks because the more grip you have the more you push the suspension, stick to sports production tyres, they last longer and grip extremely well too. I am using Dunlop D209GP tyres and testing at Ledenon proved to me they are more than up to the job!

For what its worth if you are at Brands on the 14th I will be riding too, so come and find me, I have booked a garage but don't know the number yet, and I will have a look at you bike and make some suggestions.

Bloke.

Hello Gordon's mate!

That would be brilliant.  I was chatting to a couple of the supermono boys at Mallory, for a bit of advice etc.

The rear shocks are Konis, so have some adjustment in them.  They're on the lowest preload just now, so there is a bit of scope, without changing springs yet.

Cheers for the advice on slicks.  In that case, I'm happy to keep using intermediates.

Will try more, and heavier, fork oil and test again the wednesday before Brands.  Cheers for now, see you then,

andy

Hello boy!  Thought you'd been a bit quiet of late!  Understandable, TT will be good this year.  I may not make my annual Manx excursion, will have to see...

I will be at snetterton, see you there?

The blag was just to take you up on the offer of your racer....  if you're still into it??  I think you said the motor was dead?  After a few rounds on my road chassis, maybe we could put my motor into your chassis and see what its like.  Or possibly rebuild the motor thats in there if it needs it and is better than mine.

Cheers for now, ta for gettin in touch!  Speak soon, see you at snett (in the absence of any disasters at Brands!)

Alan, mate, that would be fantastic.  What thickness ally do you reckon?  10mm?  Do you think this would do?  I do tend to load up the outside pegs a bit, and wouldn't want the plates to bend (tho think I'd notice this- they'd probably last a race!)

My fabrication skills are next to non-existant, so I would be mightily grateful.  Will pay you for the ally, or a free ticket for a round of your choice?

I will measure what I have.  They are 'orrible cast ally Raask things I think, and are about 15mm thick, but wth the middle cut out (if you see what I mean).

Cheers, will give you a shout.    Thanks everyone for your help and support!  Much appreciated by the idiot!
