FMX. Kicker??
« on: February 17, 2016, 01:48:01 PM »
Afternoon all,
I bought a FMX650 engine off crazy frog on Sunday..thanks again Pete (no he didn't look or sound very French  ;) ;)) anyway my question is, does anyone know if the FMX can be converted to a kickstart engine without to much trouble. I intend to slot the motor into an XBR frame to build a "replacement" cafe racer for the one I.......eerrr wrote off. Weight saving is fairly high in my game plan so would ideally like to ditch the lecci starter if poss and all the associated ring gear gubbins. If it proves to be to difficult or expensive i,ll just atta stick with lecci starter....thanks in advance. Michael

I only recently even heard of the FMX. I thought the whole 650 Honda single thing ended with the Vigor, which, again, most people haven't heard of. I reckon it must be a good engine, as its predeccessors are all nice bikes  ;)

I picked the engine up with Mick and we both noticed two "extra" pipes coming out of the top front of the cylinder, just below the exhaust ports. At first I thought these might be additional oil pipes but I also wondered if they are air admittance pipes for emissions?  The engine has been de tuned by looking at the specs. Anyone know?

Cheers

I can see from photos on Google that these two pipes go via a small "box" (oo er) into the airbox.

Looking at pictures on Google it looks pretty much the same as the American spec GB's - it's an air emissions thing for the Californian emissions regulations and it does restrict the power. You should be able to remove it and blank off the ports on the engine - thats what they do with GB's - you sometimes see the blanking plates on Ebay but they would be easy enough to make up.

Fitting a kicker - I'm not entirely sure. The FMX ( SLR, Vigor) is I believe based on the NX650 dominator engine which I think could be fitted with a kicker as all the shafts were inside the cases but you needed to fit a different right crankcase plus all the kickstart gears and the lever - doable but a bit of a rave. I think you may be able to do the same on the FMX but check first - there is a Honda Dominator forum somewhere on the web.

Looking at the specs for the FMX and the NX the FMX seems to be about 5-6bhp down on the NX and slower on the standing 1/4.  The actual engine specs ( bore/stroke compression, carb) look the same so it may be a different CDI unit making the difference - they did that on some of the GB's which were about 4 bhp down on the XBR's -( less ignition advance).

AFAIK, the FMX engine has all the smog filters and gubbins fitted, and I think there are kits available for around £10 to blank off the ports, etc. or you could make your own with some ally plate.

Again, AFAIK the lost horses when comparing the FMX to the NX are due in the main to a restrictive exhaust. A popular mod for SLR/FX/FMX owners is to de-baffle the exhausts and up jet a couple of sizes which does definitely restore some umph, as the bike will then pull a 1 tooth larger gearbox sprocket. I did this to my SLR to good effect.

Ah just one other thing is the height of the oil tank relevant seen as the FMX is oil in frame and clearly the XBR isn't plus I'm thinkin of fabin up and relocating the oil tank on the XBR....thanks again...Michael
