Drilling the petrol cap out.
« on: March 08, 2015, 02:32:48 PM »
Ive just bought a Suzuki GN Tank of eBay but the cap is in and the key is lost.

Any suggestions on how to drill it out?

Cheers,

If its a hinged cap, try punching out the pin of the hinge. This worked for me once, and no damage.

If you can get the frame number of the bike the tank came off, Suzuki may be able to supply a key, or maybe even a locksmith, as Tommy suggests. I know this isn't likely if you just bought the tank, but its just a thought  :-\

Had another thought, (i know, dangerous  :-\ ). If all else fails, just carefully slice the top off the petrol cap with a grinder! To be on the safe side, take off the petrol tap first, and fill tank with water  ;)

This is my first post, and I know I should introduce myself first, but need to get piccies done to post up! Anyway, I did this a couple of years ago when I lost the keys to my new bike (D'oh!!) before I even got to ride it.

I just went straight in through the key hole with the biggest drill that would fit (about 10mm I think). I did this with a tank full of petrol, but went very slowly indeed to avoid sparks. It didn't take too long to break through the 'key hole' bit and expose the tumblers which could then be manually clicked out of the way.

It was a bit of a fiddle, but worked for me...

tank came today, its nor a hinged cap and there's no numbers. Started to drill a whole, went up a few drill sizes but battery died so ill ruin the tank at a later date. I'll post how the destruction goes.
