SRX 600 engine
« on: December 04, 2014, 03:56:36 PM »
First post on this forum and first SRX ever which I swapped a Guzzi for about 4 weeks ago. Rode it 180 miles home at 70ish and the first set of lights I could hear the banging/knocking noise from within.

So I took my new SRX 600 to Tony at Maitland Racing today. It is cycling a bit as it would be smooth for say 10 secs and then bang away then quiet again. He said get yourself another engine. Don't know much about SRX/XT engines and really don't want to start learning on this at the moment. No shed etc.
I live in North London and hope to get in touch with Slipstream next week.
Until then it's over to you......

Cheers

Hmm mm.   Not sure about the cyclic nature, but I'd take Tony's advice.

Oil pump? Cam? Piston?

Either way I fear it's rebuild time matey. I am sure slipstream will help you out, they are good. Not cheap, but they wouldn't be good if they were!

Cheers,

Andy

Are you the same guy who had the cracked clutch basket ?. I f not check the primary drive nut, they can loosen off. If you remove the petrol tank and battery you can lay the bike on its side and remove the clutch cover without loosing all the oil.

Yes , that's me. Just aking around on various forums.
Thanks , that's a good plan. Will wait until my replacement basket arrives.

Are you riding it with the cracked clutch basket ? If so please stop before it grenades on you and locks up the rear wheel.

Yes,  but only once.
Thanks for that. It has me worried

As I said I am asking around.
From The Hubb came this reply as to why the crack was there....

hi in the first pic there looks to be a rounded indent in the slot where the clutch plates tangs slide(with the crack running from that corner),maybe a bar has been put between the slots to tighten/undo the large centre nut.

The explanation makes sense. Does make you wonder why it was stripped. When re-assembling dont forget to use new tab washers.

Cheers, after your riding warning I am going to borrow/hire a van and take it down to Slipstream later in the week. Spoke to Martin and he will give it a good going over.

I'll update with his findings.

Martin got back to me today with the bad news.
The previous owner had managed to seal up the oilways with instant gasket.
So it's a head, cam, piston, rebore, big end , main bearings.
Along with two gears and the clutch basket that we already knew about.

Oh bother.

:'( Commisarations Min, that is an awful catalogue of woe and I would dread the bill for the parts and fettling to suit.

Any chance of getting the Guzzi back as well?  ???

I hope 2015 turns out better than the end of 2014.

My regards, Bill

We came to a satisfactory financial arrangement and now I can look forward to having a nice engine built up. I am sure Martin will check over the oil pump.
Will keep y'all informed.

So the SRX is back,  700 miles on the road so far and it fairly rocks. Martin built me a great engine showing 37bhp on the dyno. Never imagined that 37 bhp could do so much. It is a low flying missile the size of a 125.

I love a happy ending. I have always thought the SRX to be one of the most fabulous looking bikes around. Enjoy.
