I have had problems starting this bike since I first got it before xmas it belongs to my son. when running pulls well etc and engine quiet with no rattles. has been stripped out as a field bike so no lights battery etc.
Ignition; runs a 6 volt magneto ignition set up with points on the end of the cam.
Has weak, or no, spark. if I clean points better spark and sometimes even a fat blue one, the points always seem to be pitting but have tried 3 different condensors with no change, I can occasionally see arking across points. Starts the rest of day ok unless left for a few hours. I've methodically changed coil, condenser, points, isolated the kill switch, spark plug, cap and HT lead. All seems to help spark but next day back to poor spark. I'm going to change all connectors and wiring next to rule out poor conections. the only thing not checked is the magneto output. also no easy fix with electronic ignition conversions as non now available to buy
Lad at bike shop puzzled but he is young, in his early 30s, and has only ever dealt with electronic ignition set ups so has no experience with points etc.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong and what I am missing AND more importantly how to fix it. I grew up with points systems but have long since converted to useing electronic ignition set ups so have forgotten what to look for.

Aye Beeman,

Is the insulating sleeve between the points and the mounting post sound. I've had current tracking through this on the Duke. Is the insulation starting breakdown on the magneto coils or are the magnets becoming de-magnetised? Do the wires delivery current from the magneto have any 'dry joints' or vibration fractures in the wire or connectors?

All maybe a load of tosh, but worth a look.

Hope this helps.

My regards, Bill.

Ta Will have a look tomorrow. Any help is useful Billl. Sometimes the obvious is missed and a second opinion spots it certainly not a load of tosh.
Going to take to workshop on the island who can check outputs of magneto and he will replace most of wires and connectors after that I will be stumped.
