Help please. Honda XL 125/185 carb settings
« on: November 18, 2013, 10:12:48 AM »
Is anyone out there familiar with the carb settings on the Honda XL185? Haynes manual says the needle should be in the fourth groove from the top. When I examined mine it was in the fourth groove from the bottom but it still runs very rich. Fourth from the top would make it richer still. I will try it on the top groove (fifth from bottom) to weaken the mixture, but would like to know whether the book is correct. Thanks.

How are your determining whether its rich or not ?.  Have you check the choke is it stuck in the on position ?. The other option is worn needles or blocked filters.

Might be as well to check someone hasn't been "re shaping" the cutaway. Bit of a long shot, but one never knows....

Thanks for your responses. Its running rich because after a run the plug gets covered in soft black sooty deposits. If the bike does not start first or second kick the plug is soaking wet  The choke is not sticking, I have completely dismantled the carb and cleaned it thoroughly before blowing everything through with compressed air. I have checked the needle, the choke and the cut-away which has not been tampered with. It just seemed to me that having the needle in almost its highest possible position was a likely cause of richness and I wondered whether the Haynes manual had got it right.

Float height? Needle valve assy dodgy? Punctured float? Worn emulsion tube?
