Do I need an ignition switch?
« on: May 27, 2013, 09:10:18 AM »
I am building a minimalistic bobber out of a Suzuki GN400, which as you probably know uses a CDI box and magneto for its ignition source. The only experience I have had with magnetos of any sort is on old British bikes so I don't understand the Suzuki set up.

My question is do I need the ignition switch? As the ignition is self generating what does the ignition switch do? Does it earth out the magneto like the old Brits to stop the bike starting?

I ask as a) I don't understand electrics and b) I intend to run the bike batteryless with as little wiring as possible for minimal lighting.

Cheers chaps.

I'm afraid I'm no electrical guru, however the main risk from leaving ignition on (apart from the security issues of course!) is flattening the battery, given the absence of battery I don't see any problem with losing the ignition switch. Personally I'd have a concealed switch to disable the ignition circuit, but obviously your project so my opinion is irrelevant ;-)
Looking forward to seeing the result! S

Smithy, PM me your email address - I have A basic motorcycle wiring guide which use to be on the web which I can send you a copy of. As well as explanations of basic electrics it has a number of wiring diagrams which you might find very useful.
