2 stroke tuning !

well i got a kmx200 in the end lol still good lil wingding need some advice on tuning i.e moving the power band to kick in sooner (a grub screw on a spring on the valve if i remember) and how and what to adjust the 2 stroke oil for peak performance with out blowing it up?

any help/ advice welcomed

if it has a power valve, then it should move automatically, i think the kawasaki system was called kips, it allows top end power like a screaming stroker, and also bottom end grunt like a commuter plodder. id reccomend taking it all out and cleaning ti before putting it back and seeing how it goes. two stroke oil can clog things up unless you are usning the best fully synthetic stuff, so it might well just be stuck!

kips explained! my point is, that before looking at tuning for more power or to move the powerband up and down the rev range, you first need to make sure that what you have is working correctly.

quick update, apparently the kips valve is the achilles heel of these motors, they fail regularly and make the power delivery a bit crap, and kawasaki have discontinued the valves as a spare part. there are no more in dealers and it seems that there are many kmx 200s off the road for lack of kips valves, this firm however,

have reverse engineered a set and are making replicas. just fyi if it turns out that your kips valves are buggered!

If performance and not crudding it up are your priorities then go for a synthetic, costs a fair bit more mind.

Lots out there, somebody does a strawberry flavour one I think.

putolene do scented two strokes aimed at the scooter market. i used to run my bantam on strawberry scented oil, but you can apparently get vanilla and mint too. as trick as they are, no modern synthetic can beat the smell of castrol r!!!!!

mmmmm castrol R ...... thanks for the info guys although i think a bike that smells like strawberry's is just wrong, nothing in the world smells as good petrol 2 stroke oil and burnt rubber !!!!

also clutch slips when the power band kicks in but im guessing thats just a knackard clutch?

yep, id do the clutch first, you might find that it restores your missing performance!

been sculkin about on the motocross forums and they are ALL saying through the airbox lid away asap i can see that more air flow can give more power but whats to stop the shit getting in? also they say rip out the oil bottle and premix but that would just be a pain as i have to fill up every day so can i adjust the flow?

Get it to run and transmit what power it has to the wheels first, then if you wish you can tweak the nuts off it and incur the wrath of the Speed God!  BIG DOSH and limitless supplies of it!

DONT remove the oil pump. just leave it as it is, run it on fully synth oil, the problem with tuning is that its a compromise, you can make it go quicker by tuning, but it will use more fuel and oil and be less reliable. i wasnt really aware that the kmx200 had a reputation for being short of go. why are you contemplating tuning a bike thast you havent even run on the road yet. id give it a couple of months as it is before deciding to start messing with it. as  for removing the airbox lid, well when you put in more air, you are going to have to mess with the jetting. you dont get something for nothing. more air means it needs more petrol. if you dont and it runs too lean you will lose power and risk holing a piston. i think kawasaki engineers know more about the kmx 200 than a bunch of guys on a forum.

i agree john think it will be ok after i sort the clutch (just came today) and also she is being a pain at the mo i got stung by tatbay (ebay) it is a real dog its been a field bike in its past benn blown up then this guy found it done the top end bodged aftermarket lights ext..(the wireing is held together with bluetack in places)  and slapped t&t on it then put on ebay !!! engine is sound put everything else needs tlc ! also having probs starting now (i swear i haven't touched it yet!) she will start but cuts out right after, give it loads of throttle to keep it going but still try's to die until it backfires then cuts out again! she runs fine when you can get her to go but just spent 3 hours in the wind and snow last night then just as the aa got there she started up ! i have cleaned the plug but its was the same for about half an hour before i got her running again
so yeah mate i will get it sorted first before playing with mix and power ext...
