hi just bought a basket case 79 xt 500 would like 12v lights etc is there an easy way to convert it

The alternator puts out enough volts but you'll have to change the reg-rec and everything else electrical. The wiring will be fine. I'm not sure about the ignition system; some bikes have a separate coil for that, which may cause a problem.

If you put 'Yamaha xt500 12 volt conversion' into google it brings up a number of hits. Seems there are several ways to do it from rigging it so you get 6v ignition but 12 v lights, to full stator swap and expensive conversion kits. Definately do-able.

Try Marcus at Rex's Speedshop, Cambridgeshure.  It comes up with Google.
