Improving the tone of my exahust

I have an SRX 400  I'm getting there making the bike mine.

My next move is to improve the sound of my exhaust. As it stands its stock, I know I can spent 350 on a new Preditor but that's about how much I paid for the bike so I'm not keen on that.

I remember some were that you can cut open the sound box and rip out some internals to help it breath and make it sound a little more, hmm, throaty.

Has any one done that? How about just doing a two into 1, I can fabricate up some tubes my self. I have no idea on what is the right shape, size, length or what ever to make it work properly and I'm sure it would not be legal.

If the end cap is riveted on then it should be easy. Drill out the rivets and remove the end cap and see how the baffles are arranged then you can start playing about with them, most exhausts are restricted in the exhaust outlet if you can increase the outlet diameter then you should get a deeper tone without modifying the internal baffles

What a hideous exhaust system, I think you would be better off cutting the downpipes off and getting a 2 into 1 pipe converter off of ebay and connecting a standard silencer to it

That was the site with the conversion. I note he gave up on it and fitted another type. I see now that the muffler is the end section.

Looking around at exhausts I see that the new ones are mostly circular cans. I think I will do a 2 into 1 converter then make a can out of a section of SS tube. If I can find one with a small enough wall, most of the pipe I use is pretty heavy.

Only thing is what does it do to the way the system as a whole will work. I thought exhausts were tuned to the motor.

True, but if your SRX is standard then its not exactly highly strung. The biggest issue will be the noise, a larger volume helps to smooth out the strong pulses generated by a single. You may also need to re-jet, I fitted a homemade 2-1 pipe some years ago and it ran noticeably weaker.

Well that's encouraging, I think I will spend some time over the winter months  playing around with a big bore pipe and internal baffle.

My 600 SRX  (I later found out it was a 620!!- the orange and white one if anyone remembers) had a number of holes drilled rount the exit pipe of the standard silencer.  I suspect this will have been done at the same time as the new piston...

It was a bit fruitier....

A later SRX (Also a 620) had standard headers and a supertrapp 2-1 section, then a large bore link pipe to a renegade can.  It went well....!  Almost too loud for the road.

As above, but I wouldn't cut anything.  Re-use the (1JK) headers.  they are stainless, and should clean up ok.  They will (reluctantly) pull out of the silencer box.  Which you can sell for very good moeny on Ebay incidently, they are like hens teeth.

The easiest option I think would be to get a complete system from ebay (40 quid) then hack the final box and see what's inside. I'm sure removing a few baffles or perforated pipes would get the desired results with very little work.

I have to say I like the way the current system looks and if I cut off the final box so it could be "bolted" back in place I could drop it in to be chromed following a polish to make it look real nice.

Personally I'm not into pretending to race, I love the bike as I can touch the ground with flat feet but would like to sit up a little more. I want to keep the bike for the joy of riding. I work form home so the only time I go out is if I can make an excuse to do so.

It is a tiny soft-toy model of Jethro I had made to sit on my handlebars appealingly....   

And I shall keep my eye out for that ale Bill.

Come November-time, I may need it....!   (Small noisy messy ugly person coming to stay for a few years....!)

As for the tone of the exhaust! Blowing bubbles in the kitchen sink on bath night, in front of the Carron range full of dry larch, was always good for a chuckle. 

The not so 'wee bairnie' now, still chuckles at the photies.
