MuZ owners/Re Dogbad's post in Chatter re power switch for fans.

The std fans supplied on the MuZ models are  not up to the job. They are also almost impossible to buy.
I added a switch to operate the fans for hot weather heavy traffic riding. The poor design and quality of the fans was always on my mind after a couple of overheating incidents and eventually proved to be the correct thing to do. I also added an indicator light to tell me when the fans were on.
If you have a MuZ, the fans sit in a plastic housing that encloses the fan motor. This housing will fill with water causing the fan to run with water getting inside through capillary action along the shaft, destroying the front bearing, which is also inaccesable for servicing. You will get your first indication of bearing failure by an annoying scream coming from it.
POST MORTEM:
The motor must have the fan removed to remove the motor from the plastic housing.
The fan itself is almost impossible to remove from the shaft.
On opening the motor, the water damage is apparent.
The hole for the shaft in the bearing wears oval
I tried to save the 2nd fan by:
Removing some plastic from under the motor so the water could drain out. The plastic housing forms a well and the only way for water to get out is by overflow out the shaft hole and being sucked into the motor.
Lubricating the Bearing by using spray grease to replace the water and hoping some of it would be drawn into the bearing.
End result, one fan is incapable of keeping the engine cool. I replaced the fans with a single 10 inch automotive unit. I also used a separate on off switch and light which has proved useful in very heavy traffic in summer. It works a treat.
