JB Weld

I've got a problem with the rocker shafts on my CB250RSA. A previous owner has had a 'bash' (literally) at removing the dowel retainers for the shafts and has made a right ****-up of them and any further attempts could well b****r-up the cam cover/rocker holder completely thus reducing a damn' good little bike to an e-bay break job.. The neoprene rings surrounding the shafts to keep the oil in after thirty years are failing causing sufficient leakage to be a nuisance (cant rely on anything these days can you ?) so something has to be done. A friend of mine who's salvaged many bikes over the last fifty years has suggested that I do a thorough de-greasing job, very thorough, and apply some of that JB Weld stuff over the partly countersunk exposed ends of the rocker shaft blending them in with the 'rocker-box'. I realise that this is a definite "bodge" but I think the world of the bike and I'd rather do this than risk scrapping it !.
Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, or maybe even an offer of a usable replacement (non-leaking) rocker-box for a less than the National Debt figure ?.
In anticipation of a worthwile response.....................Dick Scratcher. :(

Hi All,
Re my enquiry about the rocker-box on my 250RSA Minithumper (Boyd) has come up with just what I'm after. a used one taking up valuable space in his garage, negotiations are in progress. Thanks to you all for reading my posting, my 'Little Girl' should be running a bit sweeter in the near future.
Regards to you all.............Dick Scratcher (Dave). :)

I've done so privately but I'd like to thank Boyd openly with his help in sending me a complete rocker-cover for my CB250RSA. As with all used spares they can be a bit of a 'Curate's Egg'. Boyd's cover + 1 rocker shaft + my rockers and the job looks to be a good-'un, just waiting on David Silver for some seals etc. Getting the rocker-shaft securing dowels out was a bit of a game, I used a 'Dremel' thingy to undercut two grooves diametrically opposite each other, clamped on a pair of 'Mole' grips, secured the cover in my vice, placed a 'drift' on the grips and resorted to a hammer (the use of which Honda recommend for their unrealistic method of removal).Unsurprisingly after thirty years the dowels were reluctant to oblige however after a short while they realised the futility of resisting and succumbed without any damage to other parts. The Neoprene ring seals on the shafts had the flexibility of 'Bakelite' and were actually smaller in diameter than the shafts due to multiple heatings and coolings and age, not suprising that they leaked. The dowels are a 'slide-fit' in the cover but are a determined interference fit in the shafts. It really is a brutal business getting them out, one that Honda could easily have avoided by tapping, say, 6mm threads in the cover and inserting set screws, much more of an engineering solution.
