If your helmet has vents, don't just close them, tape them over,
The ride will be colder than you can imagine

This is where I could have come unstuck bigtime, the recent cold weather was a wake up call, up until last week I was actually going to wear my open face helmet a balaclava & goggles.
I can only compare a recent jouney wearing my open face helmet to been hit across the forehead with a lump of 4 x 2.
Better to find out now, sooner than later I suppose.

I did it in 2006 in open face, head over and safety glasses. Temps were -10ish. Not too bad. The initial pins and needles wear off to numbness and you are okay for the next 100 miles or so 'til you stop to fill up. As long as your hands and feet stay warm then happy days. Coldest part for me was around Regensberg. Can't say enough about the heated grips and knuckle guard combination. Bliss...

Oh and look back, look back....look back...... Then pull out to overtake on the autobahn. Your DR is slower than you think compared to the Audis and Beemers in the outside lane.

I wear a flip up visor Arai open face with a balaclava. Works for me. I did wear my Arai full face on one Elefant trip and it was warm, but I don't get on with the reduced visibility.

GC
I agree GC, I also prefer open face helmets, I've decided to order my self a Bob Heath wrap around visor and will take the gogggles along as back up

Mel

I have used an open face for Donkeys Years now and find Bob Heath flip up visor ideal.
Still had my breath freezing on the inside of my visor going to The Elafant in 2000,and beard freezing to my Buff. :o

Now that confirms what I'd suspected weeks ago.

The forum newbie 'Sexually Oriented' is actually the Rants regular formerly known as 'Jules'.  ;)

Transformation now complete.
I was going to go with a pair of 40mm ammo boxes for the panniers but when they arrived they weren’t big enough.
Took the advice of GC and checked every electrical connection - good call GC,  there was a couple of ropey looking connectors.
Assembled all bolts with Screwlock and finally sprayed the whole bike ( except the brakes ) with ACF 50 anti corrosion spray.
I took it out for a run and noticed the benefit of the screen straight away.
Going away this weekend to the Rallymans Rally to give all the gear a final try out then Elefantentreffen here I come

Today I changed my tyre, made brackets and fitted a screen, made and fitted a leg shield, fitted panniers front and rear on the offside, ordered a new shock for the sidecar and made myself a snow shovel.

Tomorrow sort out my second battery and dig my way through the garage to find all the gear I think I'll need and think about what else I'll need. ???

I know this may sound silly, but if you have MotoX or skiing goggles then they can be very useful. If your visor ices, etc. you can use the goggles and keep riding.

If it's snowing heavily when you're walking around the site you will be able to see where you're going. I found my MotoX goggles invaluable for this reason in 2000.

And, of course, a pee bottle. Who wants to get out of their tent at four in the morning when it's minus 15?
