SRX 600 Flywheel Removal
« on: August 13, 2010, 06:23:14 PM »
Hello I need to remove the flywheel on a twin shock srx 600, I have undone the 19mm nut on the left side of the crank (and removed the washer).

My question is, do I need a special flywheel puller? Or if I give the centre of the flywheel a clout will it pop off the taper of the crank?

Cheers John

I made an extractor for said flywheel...but it was "over engineered" if you get my drift....where are you?...if you are near Telford you can come and borrow it..otherwise Royal Mail will have to benefit

It might.....it might also bu55er up the thread.....I made up a puller (which, for the carriage price, you are more than welcome to use), heated it all up a bit then tightened up the puller, gave it a bang on the center puller bolt.....repeat 3 times....bingo.... and don't complain about it being too tight....much better than the flywheel/magnet flying orf and bu55ering up everything!

Thanks for the generous offers of the loan of your pullers, however I am in somerset, and this probably won't be the only time I will need to remove the flywheel. So I will attempt to make my own.

Are your pullers 3 sided, that pick up on the 3 long slots on the inside of the flywheel?

If they are different please describe.

John I will try and remember to take a few photos of mine tomorrow and post the pics on here. You are more than welcome to borrow it for as long as you need, if its the same as you want.

On further inspection with a torch I can see there are 3 threaded holes in the flywheel that should be easy to make a puller fit.

Thanks again.

Hi John, as promised I just dug out my flywheelpuller from the depths of the garage. I know its a bit manky and the Main Puller bolt needs cleaning but it`s all there and did the job admirably. If you do decide to make one, ensure you use decent size thickness plate (I used 12m/m) and ensure you  get the hole centres right or if not you`ll have to elongate the holes and use big (thick)washers. Make sure you lubricate the main puller bolt with oil or grease or it may pick up on the thread. Alternatively a universal puller may fit.

Made a puller and got the flywheel off. Thanks for the help.

Got at my snapped camchain which had dropped down behind the flywheel.

I bought this engine from a breaker, didn't fit it while it was still under the weeks warranty, left it ticking over and it just stopped.

I thought that maybe the engine had been stood for ages and the camchain had gone rusty and snapped. But on inspection, and because the camchain tensioner screws were not done up tight enough, I now think that the cam chain tensioner had been removed - then screwed back in without setting the tension correctly, so it was pressing in far too much.

Chain

Rear guide with (strange) small round push marks above where the tensioner locates

And rear guide showing excess wear

Blimey!......
I don't think you can tighten the cam tensioner too much.....it's a spring pushing the rear guide.....

I suggest that you make further investigstions to find the cause

also you'll need to check the valves/piston.....as probably contact has been made

The adjuster is in two parts, the ratchet section and spring. If the whole unit was removed by removing the two allen bolts, as it was removed it would adjust outwards under the spring pressure. if it was then re-assembled without first de-adjusting it then the camchain would be over tensioned.
