Frame restoration?

I am just about to buy another SRX600, .......for spares, well actually it will be an every day bike so I can keep my other one for best.

Can anyone tell me the best way to go about restoring the frame, it has gone a little tatty but is not bad, I would like to keep the colour as close to the yamaha's original as possible, do you recommend sand blasting and powder coating or sand blasting and painting? I am only 25 miles from Birmingham. Also what preparation will be needed.

I will be looking to get the seat recovered (know of a good person to do this?)or a good second hand one and a good tank if anyone has one they would like to sell.

If you care to PM me with your address, I'll send a CD copy of an original workshop manual down to you.

As for painting, I havn't done mine (Sally), but have done other motorcycles with both Hammerite, 2 pack enamel paint and powder coating.

Sand blast, 'Bondaprime' then 2 coats of brush applied Hammerite was cheap and durable. Chips were easily painted over and whilst the finish wasn't concours, it didn't look bad.

Sand blast then primer and 2 pack wasn't cheap, but very durable and applied by a good painter had a good finish, but not as good as coach enamel. Polishes up and keeps a good surface.

Sand blast then plastic coating wasn't that cheap, durable for so long and then begins to look tired ( won't polish up because of minute scratches). If worn through or chipped by a stone and then water gets underneath, the corrosion spreads unseen and may rot through the steel! 

Conclusion, 2 pack or Hammerite for me.

Birmingham and it's environs should be able to supply all you need, when it comes to paint, upholstery, and maybe tanks.

Hello Christine,
                  I have only recently finished my SRX but I had a good job having my frame powder coated at Powder Coatings near Spaghetti Junction (http://www.powder-coatings.ltd.uk/). I have had several done by them and they certainly do a first class job. The SRX that Trevor (tj63) now has that I restored a couple of years ago was powder coated by them and he matched the original colour of the frame (I took the front cross piece that still had original paint on it for him to match). A good upholsterer can be found in Walsall Wood high street..I cant remember his name but will look him up and let you know, he did the seat for Trvors bike. I know you will be able to get an SRX tank from D and K at Newcastle under Lyme but you will probably pay for it...although having said that..mine was a very acceptable £75 + vat but vat was only 15% at time

I masked off, sanded off and sprayed with black smoothrite- really turned out good without having to do the full engine out strip down-
