Rex is a runner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yippeee! After lots of kicking he suddenly roared into life amid afew backfires. Engine won't tick over at the moment so tonight i get him out of the garage to play with throttle stop. I've got the pilot 2 + quarter turns out- is that right?

I'm a bt worried abut the backfire too...I checked the timing & it seemed ok so what would cause it? I know very little about thumper 4 strokes so any advice welcome. More pics to follow.

Pilot screw setting is HERE

As for the back fire, was that when you were starting it or when it was running ?

Big occasional backfires while attempting to start then once running smaller popping when revving it...

Ahhhh, I know the exhaust isn't tight as i didn't nip up the clamps at the downpipe/silencer joints. Didn't realise that could cause a backfire tho  :-[ I'll tighten them up & try again, thanks Steve H, you a star!

OK...  "sigh"   I tightened exhaust clamps, reset pilot screw, then kicked and kicked and kicked and nowt but odd backfire. Tried choke full on, half on, off, no throttle, bit of throttle, priming carb but all to no avail. They can't be this difficult to start can they ???

Is there a "technique" for this or do i need a new set of carbs? I checked the spark by putting a spare plug in the cap & left the bike's plug in situ. Spark looked OK to me...

A bit discouraging if I can't start the thing...

Is there a "technique" for this.

My approach is THIS look for "Q - How do I start my SRX ?"
The key is finding TDC, just push the kickstart slowly and you will eventually find a point where it s difficult to turn it over, push past this point, then bring the kickstart up to the top point and try again. Assertive kicks rather than manic prodding work best.

A freudian slip?

(for those who don't know, a Freudian slip is when you unconsciously substitute one word for a mother).
