Time to convert?
« on: February 20, 2010, 12:50:48 PM »
Odd question .Does anyone know if a MPH tacho(speedo, rev) will fit onto an import bike KPH? I would like to change the set up but do not know if the drive on the wheel would need replacing.Had a few scrapes with the radar gun and a few awkward questions like-" what speed do you think YOU were doing sir?" Math and quick calculation not being my strong point.Being a biker also and loving the XBR he let me off. ::) 38 in a very steeeeep down hill 30.  :o

You won't need to change the tacho as it's electronic ( picks up through the CDI).  I don't think the speedo drive will be different, if anything any change in the speedo gearing will probably be in the speedo head.  Have a look in the sales section as I know TurkeyUK was selling a load of XBR bits and he may have an MPH speedo.  In the meantime just put a dab of paint on the speedo face at a measured 30 - 40 -50- 60, that's all I did with my old Cossack.  8)

Quick update -

I've checked the parts catalogue for the XBR and the speedo drive looks to be the same for all areas.  The Speedo AND the tacho are both shown as UK area specific ( I still can't see why the tacho would be different).
So from that I would guess that the MPH speedo should fit straight on

My CB250RS does the same, and without an electric start can be a right pain in the a**e when I've weaved my way to the front of the lights. Is it crap in the carb. or is it a universal Honda problem? I've learnt to live with it now and always 'blip' the throttle before coming to a halt; once stopped it seems to tickover nicely enough.

There still seem to be quite a few XBR's around although they are becoming 'Classic' now.  They are probably the most common single in the club.  As for the cutting out thing, yes they do all do that and it is annoying.  You might want to know they also have the following other things:
sticky/ sieze front calipers - they need cleaning from time to time, if you ever take the head off you'll probably find a crack from the plug hole to one of the valve seats - don't worry they all do that too.
Finally if it's been standing for a while, you may find that when you kick it over you've lost all compression - don't panic! they do this but i've no idea why.  Just keep kicking it over and eventually compression will return ..welcome to the wonderful world of the XBR!!  ( actually they are damn good bikes and generally very little trouble).

Aye Pete,

Have a shufty at the URL that I have inserted below:

KPH - MPH converter

All the 'online' motorcycle stores sell them. I fitted one to the Boy Bros 400 when purchased ~10 years ago and with ~50K miles under it's belt in all weathers, it's never been a problem. Amends both the speed and distance recorded to miles. You can if you wish just use a sticker on the face of the speedo or as Steve#222 suggests put some marks with paint on the face. I hope you don't get caught again. ;)

My regards, Bill.

If the bike is cutting out then you probably have the original main and pilot jet fitted and/or the tappets set to the original settings. Honda sent out a dealer note (available on this site I believe) and update kit for all bikes that suffered from cutting out.

Strangely enough not all of them did suffer from the problem, I have an engine here that is still running the smaller jet sizes, but I do use the revised tappet clearances.

Hmmmm! plot thickens. Thanks onepot will try to find revised jets and tappets values.Wet weather seems to be a factor in all this as i use the bike in all conditions, you get to know the feel for things. ;) or is it we've just had a extraordinary bloody cold winter. :o
