How do i check the choke, i have looked at the connector part and the cable is moving smoothly there.?

The brass choke plunger gets stuck in the carb body. Look at where the cable goes onto the carb body, there is a rubber boot which covers a curved metal tube held onto the carb by a brass nut. Undo the brass nut, then when its loose pull the cable out. You should then have a brass plunger on the end of the cable, and a spring round the inner cable holding the plunger onto the the innner cable. The only thing that turns the choke off is this spring, and its pretty weak so any corrosion between the brass plunger and choke body will cause it to stick.
Its assembly 46 on the diagram below

I reckon Steveh's suggestion is probably the one to go for....black plug and slowly dying is a 'choke out' symptom
