SRX600 air filter
« on: July 05, 2009, 07:39:11 PM »
Hi,
Has anyone fitted a K and N air filter to an srx600, are they any better than the standard filter.
Do you need to alter jets? The exhaust and carbs are original.
Thanks Chrisine.

Aye Christine,

Yes!
Yes, because you wash, re-oil and refit or just give it a 'blow through' to get the worst of the insects off.
No.
Exhaust on mine is a BSM 'Futura' with the quiet pipe and standard carbs. May make things a little lean in the carb, but I have not had any troubles.

See if SteveH and SteveL, or Andy230, drop by as they have experience of this tweak as well! ;)

All the best, Bill.

Yes and no  :)
on #4 srx (just sold) i did fit a replacement K&N for a while, the bike was already running on modified spring and needle in the standard carbs(dynojet kit.. at £70 not really wort the hassle), and a modified predator (nuffink inside the 'silencer') exhaust system......however, before i sold it i fitted a new standard air filter, and to be honest there was little or no difference in any of the areas you'd expect (idle, accelleration, top speed, cold start, hot start etc)....main advantage is wot old Bill said, you can wash it out in petrol, re-oil it and away you go, must be a saving in the long run

My guess is the main restriction on the SRX intake is the air box trumpet/cover. From memory the Stage II Dynojet kit is jetted to suit a K+N with the air box cover removed, and Stage III seperate filters. So if you are going to keep the box as standard you should be ok. I had a standard SRX400 which ran slighly rich on a paper filter but fine on a K+N so they do make a difference but as Steve said its minor.
The K+N / paper filter debate is not that straightforward. Some argue that the K+N doesnt filter that well and that a paper filter is better after a 1000 miles or so. They are very easy to over-oil, reducing any perfromance gains.
That said in the long term they are better value than paper filters.
