XT500 oil separator

Hi
My 1977 Yamaha XT500 recently melted its original air filter housing, so I removed it and fitted a K&N air filter instead. The bike starts and runs fine and the plug is a good colour, so I think I might keep with the K&N.
My problem is with the air separator unit that connects between the crankcase and the original air filter, it is now just sitting there on top of the crankcase wobbling about and looking sorry for itself.
If I put my finger over the outlet while the engine is running, I can feel a vacuum pulsing with the engine revs.
I have fitted a length of pipe to it and taken it to a position under the seat for the time being.
Does anyone know if this will cause any problems ?

If it is as I understand a crankcase breather I have used these in similar situations.

They can be mounted on any suitable bolt.

You could also exit the pipe onto the chain for lubrication.
