just when everything was going so well......
« on: October 01, 2006, 08:38:07 PM »
thought I'd use up some of my brownie points and head off to cadwell today to see the historic/vintage/veteran racing, checked weather forecast....a few showers it said... no need for waterproofs then, 'cos i've treated my leathers so many times they MUST be impervious to showers at least??.
30 miles in reasonably sunny and warm conditions to kings lynn, then......bluddy heavens opened, remaining 50 miles in the heaviest continual rain i've ever ridden through!
bike behaved impeccably.....leathers were crap!! soaked through, anyway, hadn't been any racing 'cos of the rain, which was easing off by the time i'd got a coffee down me.
and racing resumed fairly quickly, blummin good it was too, worth the drowning.
I did take the precaution of taking a spare set of gloves, 't' shirts and socks (with plastic bags), so did a quick change (if I have dry and warm feet and hands, i feel so much better on the bike), set off home about 5 in drying conditions and a watery sun. So gave it a bit of a handful on the way back, once back on the (dreadful) A17 was 'making progress' at about 85 (ish) kit slowly drying out, bike sounding good, ......no it wasn't.... sort of suddenly didn't seem to want to 'get on' and, lifting my visor there seemed to be more noise, yes, definitely...not on the overrun or cruising at 50 ....but when the throttle was opened up.....an exrea knock.....a millisecond or 2 before the ignition (or maybe after) took it easy for a while, not getting any worse, eased it up to 60, again, not any worse after 10 miles, so up to 70's, still ok, noisy if opened up, but ok when cruising.......got home ok, helmet off, quick check, no oil leak or gasket leak, or exhaust leak. sounds top endish......so after all that, (if you're still with me) ideas on a postcard would be very welcome.................

Aye Steve,

Sorry not to spot you (Were you identifiable as we've never met? Would you want to be?) or the bike and have a blether. Otherwise occupied as in seperate blether on site.

Might I offer, the onset of piston slap, or wear of the cam bearing surfaces in the head, finally, Andy's bet noir, contact with the exhaust valve lifter and rocker arm at 'higher' rpm.

I hope you are able to come to a painless and cheap diagnosis soon.

Cheers, Bill

hi bill, on monday I gave the old girl a  wash and brush up, checked the oil (a bit low but not drastically) started her up (no problem with compression), really is rattley, worse as throttle is blipped, definitely sounds at the top end.....wouldn't be the cams i think as this would be the same noise wherever the throttle is, tending towards the little end (last time the engine was opened up i replaced the mains, bigend, and the little end was reamed out and sleeved), got it in my mind this may be failing. so will have to open up the top end later in the week and hope it's not too bad
Cheers
