Gasket sets

I'm sure this has been answered before but I shall ask anyway. I'm about sort out 5th gear on my SRX and am thinking of using a pattern gasket set except for the head gasket were I intend to use genuine Yamaha. Any observations would be appreciated, particularly from people who have already done this job themselves. I think I will need genuine O rings as well as I am not sure that the pattern sets contain all the little bits.

Evening Martyn,

A pattern gasket between the right hand crankcase and the outer clutch cover casing blew with me, oil all over the back tyre!

When you strip the motor you will see that the width of the mating surfaces at ~10:00 o'clock, behind the kickstart, when viewed from the off side of the bike is very narrow. The difference in the quality of the 'pattern' and 'genuine' gasket material was very marked. The 'pattern' being made from thinner material, prone to deformation.

I check all case mating faces against a sheet of plate glass and try sliding a 2 thou feeler gauge between the surfaces, others may use a different thickness of guage. Also lightly paint a gasket cement onto the case surfaces, I use Honda's cement, before assembly. Torque to factory pattern and values.

Once motor has been re-assembled, run up and warmed through and cooled, check the torques where possible.

Cheers, Bill

Aye Martyn,

Try the 'Search' facility from the 'Menu Bar' on this page. Tick the boxes and away you go.

Works a treat and definitely essential when tracing some of the drivel, errrr sorry, astute prose tapped out for these pages!

Regards, Bill

Thanks for that Bill, perhaps I will lash out the extra and try all genuine gaskets in spite of the extra expense. I can't find a search facility on my menu bar. Am I missing something [Besides grey cells]?
