SRX saga
« on: January 31, 2008, 04:31:59 PM »
I've bought a UK spec SRX and having owned a couple of them in the past know they can be 'temperamental'. This particular SRX(600) is really testing my patience, when i got it it had a rusty tank so disassembled the carbs and throughly cleaned 'em. Changing the tank for a good one, now the bike will only start from stone cold and won't restart when warm or hot. changed the spark plug battery and reg/rec. also there is a smell of petrol in the oil. and ideas?

i always say this, and it never is, but get a multimeter across the wires from the stator- wires coming out th eengine cover.

Book data on www.srx600.net

and compare to yours.

Mine would start and runn fine when cold, but after about a mile or 2, started misfiring, and being a pig.  sounds same?  always started tho.... (generally)

I think the heat was affecting resistance of the coils...

give it a bash.  Its cheap anyway   ;D

"Smell of petrol in the oil" could be a sign of a leaking float valve, however this would only be the case if it was left on 'prime'. Is the choke stuck on, quite a common problem and makes starting when warm tricky

Ta Lads, whats the cure for sticking chole plunger? the cables free and well oiled i think, would a new o-ring be required?

I just clean mine off and spray WD40 in the hole. The problem seems to happen becuase water runs down the choke cable.

Yeah I agree, my choke sticks occasionally and although the cable will move freely it does not mean that the chioke plunger is seating in  the carb. I clean mine off and grease and managed to shoehorn and extra spring inside the original courtesy of mr BIC!
Has been fine for ages now.

I have had exactly this problem with mine.   In my case it was due to my cleaning ther carb and setting the float at the wrong height.

It won't start when hot as the oil becomes too thin/ dilute / pressurised / overheated ( or something like that) with all the fuel getting into it.

upon checking the float height I found it to be exactly as specified in the manual, I set it a bit lower eg 20mm instead of 26. After that ( and changing the oil ) it was fine.  I guess it was never closing the valve properly.

Same problem could also be caused by the float valve seal leaking.

Thanks a lot lads, the bic spring worked a treat, as did greasing the choke plunger. changed the oil, about 3 litres of molotov cocktail mix!. don't think it did any harm as it wasn't run for any more than 10 seconds.
