Winter camping weekend in Wales

The Monmouth Brecon canal is a nice one - we have paddled it a few times, very pretty and the aquaduct near Brecon is - umm - interesting to paddle.  The Wye can get filled in Winter - which makes it fun....

The downside of the Canal is that it has no current - or very little - and thus you have to paddle all the way.  The upside is that there are a few pubs that back on to it and can be seen as stops.

Did not see the whole account on the TV - but some of the Brecon - Monmouth canal has fallen out of its banks and into some houses - may impinge on a nice day.

The problem was in Gilwern (near Abergavenny), they are unlikely to get much further than the first pub, let along paddle to Gilwern

Update on canoeing: I am unable to get to Llanthony until early Saturday morning so I can't see it happening. Also, they wanted to chuck us into the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal and that's probably a bit further than we intended travelling (with hangovers).

Jethro, Julian and Tim will be onsite on Friday though.

The pub does meals in the evening, but I'd recommend a stove for lunch and brekkie.

If all goes to plan I might be bringing my big family tent (for us to sit in) and perhaps a big pot of stew. I'll let you know.

Will you be bringing the zed or pulling one of the HT leads off the Bonnie Andy?

I'm getting too old (or lazy) for the amount of gear one can carry on the zed, so it'll be three wheels for me. Once it rains, the Bonneville tends to run on one cylinder anyway, Hinckley still puts the coil in the same stupid place Meriden knew didn't work in 1963   

If you are coming too, I'll bring the photo album of the Zed "restoration" though.

The Bonneville is now paired with a Ural chair. British reliability (Ok simple to fix unreliability) coupled with the ability to lug a huge amount of gear, some of it bolted to the outside (leaves space for the dog (Although he'll not be coming this time)!).

I tried loading the black zed (before I siezed it) with the gear for the Elefant. Filled one pannier just with the sleeping bag. As there was no room left for such essensials as the tea pot and cocktail glasses it was going to be a very rough trip
