Engine goes straight in with no mods required to the frame, but there are issues.
It would be easier to fit an XBR generator so that the wiring matches up
NX runs a 520 chain but you cannot fit an XBR 525 sprocket because the splines are different - However there's another way to get around this
Gear shift would be up for first with lever fitted as per the XBR - not really a problem if it's your only bike.

Then there are the little things.
I found the NX gearing a bit too 'off-road' for scratching with odd jumps between the gears, however I cured this quite easily.
The carb may be different - I'm told mine had an XBR carb jetted to suit - is that right Richard (the builder)?

I'm being less than specific because although I'm happy to share this info with you as a club member, I don't want to broadcast it to non members. Drop me a mail and I'll go into more detail

Hi Mixerman,

Have a look at http://www.bikerworld.co.uk/tech/XBR650/index.html

Also look at www.xbr.de - search for it in google and it will translate it for you. A couple of good articles under Arvid Lovik and Schottmeier Special.

You need to look at the GB500 FAQ at www.thumperpage.com - all the necessary information is provided there by Laf Young (Hawaii). You can avoid the reverse gear change pattern by using XBR/GB gear clusters. The NX engine will suit you if you're a thumpy, short-shifting kind of rider. My current NX engine (in my GB650) has a Wiseco piston and unspecified porting work, with standard cam (I didn't build it). It both thumps like a Dominator and revs out like an XBR :-)

Jetting is a matter of experiment, I ended up with a 165 main but then I have no airbox, and a noisy Predator system.

The chap who wrote the XBR article referred to previously got a lot of advice from the builder of my engine, who lives just outside York. I can pass on a phone number for the latter, there's not a lot he doesn't know about what you want to know. Drop me an email if you want it.

Oh, and it's not necessary to change, move or slot any of the engine mountings. Laf Young did, in his Hawaiian account, but his was a US model GB500 (either there's a subtle difference, or he wasn't persuasive enough).

That's right, I'm guessing people who do slot the mounts just haven't twigged that even the original engine sometimes needs help with a long lever to line up with the mounting holes.

Same crankcases !
So WHY !!???
Why slot the cases ?
Same with the discs GB/XBR they are the same.
Cant remember who it was,but some silly bugger told me they were different....No They are not !
CBR 600 and a few other models use the same disc aswell.

I think I was saying the same thing as you, but I was making the point that because the engine (whether 500, 650 or 400) can be an awkward fit on the mounts, that's probably why some people think that their 650 lump isn't the same as the engine they removed.

Once you have most of your engine bolts in the last mount somtimes won't line up until you apply a levering force with a strong broom handle, etc. I can see that if you don't know this it might appear that your new engine has slightly different castings.

And yes, all sorts of mid 80s Honda's had the same disk, that's why I have about 4 spare here that I picked up at autojumbles for bladders. GB disk is interchangeable with XBR disk, despite the absence of scallops to the inner edge.
