Well done 002, the Acme-squirrel self assembly pannier kit project is underway :-) Had a contact from work cut/bend the ali sheet and I've bought some angle from CG rees. Add some stolen screws & whiz tights and hey presto home made panniers :-)

So far I've joined the two halves together to form the sides and am off to get a desent mitre block to cut my angle edging. Will post more piccies as things develop, cheers.

Pat,

I would be interested in more details of this as I would like to fit some solid panniers to the Norton

Mmm now we were asked for humour - it seems pretty obvious they are to be panniers - where are the jokes?  I was expecting more of you all.

I have a set of Craven panniers about here somewhere with about 10 years worth of IoM TT stickers from the 70's.  Can never decide what to put them on - but did think if I ever get another CG amybe a full dress CG with the panniers and a similar top box?

Hi Bruce I'll tell more once I've figured out what I'm doing. Winging it a bit and my design is developing as I find the pit falls. Never was good at thinking ahead :-)
Will post more later.

GUess you could take a look at some of the metal box panniers that are about for inspiration - although I have seen ex-service ammo boxes and the like used too - waterproof if not a little heavy.  ANy ideas about the frames and the fixings?

Already have the frames on the bike. I made them earlier in the year with the help of SteveH who did the welding. As for fixings, I'm going 'simple' as it fits my mentality and the panniers will bolt directly to the frame at 3 points. I plan to pass the bolt through the pannier from the inside out and lock it in place with two nuts which will act as spacers between pannier and frame.(something that's required cos when I made the frames I made them 10mm too narrow to clear the indicators. Oops) this should allow me to pass the remaining bolt through the frame and secure with a nylock nut.

The bit I'm puzzled by at the moment is how to fix the lid without welding. If I hinge them with the bolts poking out then the nuts could be undone, if I go the other way then the nuts will foul the box :-? Heyho, the fun of being an inventor.

pop or ordinary rivets.  Can you get snap off bolts in the size you want? - mind a bugger to undo.  Standard nuts trim off surplus and centre pop - reduces chances of being undone, ditto but with super glue or araldite.  Dome nuts on the inside.  Turn some standard nuts down on a lathe until a snap on tools surface drive socket will grip but not a standard spanner.  Glue.

For sealing them http://www.polymax.co.uk/ do nitrex and silicone section that could do the job - but they have a minimum order of £10.  However I have a couple of quids worth I want from them so maybe we could team up if you want some section.

I cant see for the life of me how youre going to fit that work bench onto the back of Dolly unless you have a side car frame lurking about as well !!!!

He is using some old stabalisers knicked off some 4 year old's bike that he is using as castors, a bit of rope and two bent nails as a tow hitch and he will be tugging it behaind DOlly as a trailer.  However there is still the issue of the effects of gravity and momentum on the bench Vs Dollys output abd brakes to be overcome.
