The continuing saga of a Rattling MZ Traveller ...

I finally thought I'd got it sorted this weekend ,One week to late for the annual rally what a surprise.

Anyway I took it for a MOT today ,Half way there I had to take on some water as the large cloud of steam I was leaving behind me suggested and smelt like I was losing coolant.
The radiator was about half full but I couldn't find any leeks.
So I continued to the MOT station ,Arriving in a large cloud of steam smelling of coolant .
I was greeted with " You ain't bringing that in here " after a short chat I left feeling totally p***ed off. Radiator was still full.

I Very nearly kicked it before leaving for home ,after all it's only taken 9 months to get it this far.
Just after leaving the MOT station the temperature warning light came on ( the fans worked fine yesterday ) then the rev counter started leaping all over the place closely followed by what sounded like a turbo charged milk float sound coming from the gearbox mainly in fourth and fifth gear other than that and couple of minor oil leaks it ran fine all the way back home.

Now for the questions .

Is it time to give up / turn it into spares ?
Would insurers consider it a modification if I fitted all the Traveller parts to a Sport ? Model isn't specified on the V5C's
Has anyone tried one of these pullers instead of the £130+ Yamaha one ?

Sounds to me as if you have a leaky hose or perhaps the tank is leaking onto something hot, logically I would be looking at the return hose because the radiator was full which suggests that the coolant is coming out after the radiator and not before it. It also seems like you need a new thermostat, assuming you have checked the fans by bypassing the thermostat. Are you sure that the sound you heard wasn't the fans coming on? I would think that your insurers would have it down as a specific model, the only way to be sure is to ask them.

Leak is sorted lose jubilee clip ,funny it was OK after filling up though ...
Fans work but the temperature switch doesn't ...

Gearbox is shafted ,
I've run it on the center stand through the gears they all make more noise than normal but fourth is the worst possibly a bearing going / gone west

The reason for the insurance question is because I've got a spare sport low mileage bargain price sat in the garage

There should be a photo of her popping up soon ,It's got to be female due to the upkeep costs...

I think it's time to have another garage clear out to finance an engine rebuild ... anyone need some XBR parts or a CD90 ?

I tried this some years ago when I had an RD and the g'box sounded like a bag of nails. It needed to be loaded. I'd try applying a bit of back brake for the engine to pull against and load the g/box if you want to run it on the centre stand to test.

Hi ram427,

I was giving it some serious loading when I first heard it on the way back from the MOT.
I only ran it up on the center stand to make sure that it was coming from the gearbox and not the fans as they have a habit of squealing .
But as the fans aren't working ,Yes I'm going round in circles...........
