RE Crusader carb

The carb on my '59 crusader needs to be replaced as the revs are all over the place, ive already had a friend replace some parts but this hasn't had any effect.

Thing is, Amal no longer produce the 375 carb.

Hitcocks have said a MK1 Concentric would be good enough, but Surrey cycles think a 376 - 15/16ths would be the better option.

I just wondered if anyone here has an unbiased view, as im new to carb techicals

I think the MkI concentric is a better carb (concentric float boal, so is better at an angle, so when you're dragging your knee it is less likely to flood/go lean.

But the think the monoblock is also ok.  Did they say why they thought the 376 was better?

Norvil, the norton spares folk tend to know their stuff.

Their site (www.norvilmotorcycle.co.uk) say of part number 376065:
CARBURETTOR - 376 - 15/16" - REPLACES 375 15/16" - MONOBLOC

so there you have it.  Maybe give them a ring, they're pretty approachable.

TBH i have heard from other people that the monobloc is better too, apparently the Concentrics were made on a budget and so what you end up with should be a inferior carb. and from my point of view id rather get the 376 just because its closer to the orignal stlye wise and im not into getting my knee down.

monobloc carbs give better power as it gives the air a smoother ride through the body. however they always tend to leak, a lot.

also worth making a note of is the fact that the modern amal carbs are nowhere near as well made as the originals; rough edges, plastic parts, and even softer aluminium.

I had a Mk1 on my Bullet when I got it. I could never get a decent idle and in the end got shot of it. Remember they were a carb for under a quid that would last the warranty apparently

I had a crusader in my student days. The original carb lasts for ages . Float bowl not being under the slide has absolutely no bearing on performance for every day use. The bike will be lucky to top 70 though the handling is wonderful There are firms that refurbish carbs. Generally  a new slide needle and needle jet sorts it.. Even then concentrics were reckoned to be inferior quality and mark 2 are definately poor quality, though they work fine.
