'How can anyone not like that bloke?' Oooo I love a challenge. How about the fact that although he is a gifted engineer with some lovely bikes he is also most certainly a liar. I have talked to mates who are engineers and even our own Steve D about his claims to do things using basic tools and the verdict is categorically not. He simply cannot do the things he claims in the way he claims to do them. He might be able to do them anyway using a well equipped machine shop, but definitely not in a garage using just hand tools. Did you see the aluminium fairing he claimed to make with no prior experience using just a bossing hammer? Even with an English wheel he would have been hard pushed to produce such perfect curves with no prior experience.

Not to mention the irritating way he bangs on about his bloody wife's baking in his videos. Hell fire if I wanted cooking I would watch Paul Holywood videos.

Well I loved watching that. Looks to be something of a handful at any speed! Car fans always seem to rave about those split rim wheels he's fitted although being somewhat technically illiterate I'm not sure why. To make a comparison between Allen and me I'm just thrilled to have been able to have fixed the slipping clutch on my KZ440.I agree that the guy's a genius and felt the little feature on Tracey and the wildlife added a good none biking element. Where baking-and not biking is concerned-I'm a bit of a Nigella and Delia fan. My wife is promising me a Nigella Malteser cake today if I'm good! By the way check out the Toya and Robert Fripp videos if you like a good send up.

M'Lud, Spartacian. With your indulgence, the defence would humbly request you draw your attention to exhibit (a), the YouTube video in which Mr. Millyard demonstrates the way he crafted said fairing, albeit using a scaled version. You will see that it is his assertion that this is the way the fairings were made by Honda in the 1960's, for which photographic evidence is also supplied. Thank you, M'Lud.

Well what can one say, the proof it certainly would appear is in the pudding (see what I did there, tracy’s Baking etc😉) well Mr spartacian it would appear that you owe Mr millyard an apology as it really does look like he bashed said fairing out with nowt but his hammers n a block o wood 🤦 Eh would you credit it... I have one of them there bossing hammers in my tool box. It’s what we plumb bobs use for lead dressing (or used to do.. when I were a lad n all that😉) think I’ll have to be having a go at making something out of ally sheet.
Oh and just to put things in a bit more perspective, I remember reading a few years ago that certain Honda engineers were given a piece of square steel bar and had to file it round in to a dowel. By hand. That in itself is no mean feat but they had to do a full 6 inch length to within something ridiculous like 2 microns. If the micrometer showed otherwise then they didn’t get in. Unbelievable.

When I was a technical apprentice with the CEGB I spent a few months learning hacksawing, filing etc. We had to reduce (from memory) a 2" cube of mild steel  to a 1" cube using cold chisels, saws and files - all faces to be at 90 degrees and flat to within a couple of thou. My effort was pathetic compared to some of the lads' work. I did ask why we couldn't use the shaping machines and millers dotted about the place but got a very rude answer.

With regard to Allan Millyard, I think his first efforts were indeed done with pretty basic hand tools but I believe his home workshop is now better equipped. He does do some fantastic stuff regardless. He has a column in one of the comics which I download from my library.

Apparently loads of drag racers run split link chains as it allows them to change gearing ratios very easily. If it's good enough for them, it's certainly good enough for me, but then I've never had anything with more than 50bhp anyway!

I thought the speedo was broken initially, but then I realised I was looking at the tacho which was barely moving! Love the noise - sounds like the lovechild of a Merlin and an American muscle car. I have no opinion of the man himself, other than that he is clearly very talented, however he does it!
