SRX600 kick start procedure
« on: April 03, 2020, 08:24:14 PM »
Hello, I dont know if I have got the hang of the kickstartprocedure of my srx. Because of the automatic decompression unit I actually dont know how/or when to kick. Should I  slowly  push the kicklever down intill it stop and then let it up and then do the real kickdown fast? Or how is the correct way to do it?

Aye Peter,

Slowly push down on the kickstarter until you feel the piston coming up to TDC on the compression stroke. Then allow the kickstart lever to return to the top of it's arc. Now apply steady pressure to the lever and you should feel the piston just go over the TDC on the compression stroke and release the kick start lever to return to the top of its
travel. Now, kick the lever down, with a long swinging thrust, through the full arc of the lever.

Beware! If you hit the kickstart lever off the 'stop' at the bottom of the arc, you may split the forging at the bottom of the lever and they are not cheap to replace, if you can find one!

IMPORTANT: Make sure that you have adjusted the 'free play' in the automatic decompresser to within the range specified in the workshop manual. If you have too much movement, not only will you not 'feel' the piston going over TDC, but the cam will interfere with the top of the valve and could cause wear/damage to the exhaust valve.

If others have different techniques, please describe them.

I hope this helps. Good health, Bill

Aye Peter,

Thanks for your reply Bill. It felt a bit embarrassing to have to ask the question but I realize now that it is not obvious how to do it right.

Aye Peter, no need to feel embarrassed, we all have to learn, life's little foibles.   ;)

Remember, about the 'Prime' position of the petrol tap and also priming the cylinder afore switching the ignition 'ON', as I described in my email.

I hope this proves successful.

Good health, Bill

I think I found my problem. The choke piston was only able to pull out half way. It got stuck in the carburetor for some reason. If you loosened the nut in the carburetor half a turn, it could move all the way. I solved it by putting a thin washer between the nut and the carburetor. Have tried cold start now twice without problems. I measured the gap in the decompression device to about 4mm (3-5mm). I already have a crack at the forged end of the kick arm but it has been there for a couple of years. One fine day I will make an attempt to weld it.

Aye Peter,

YES! Pleased to read that you have found the problem and been able to sort it out.

Hopefully, the lurgy will pass in Sweden and allow you to take the SRX or the SR for a nice canter.  ;)

My regards, Bill

The trick is to run faster than the virus's spread rate.
Thank again

I have made three cold starts now and it has started on the first kick every time.
I am happy. :-)

Had mine twenty plus years, still struggle some days. I find the best way is if it wont start using te standard approach, then surprise it by changing tactic, seems to shock it into starting sometimes :-)
