CB250RS FRAME BREAKAGE
« on: March 30, 2020, 06:17:37 PM »
The part of the frame which supports the right side footrest hanger has broken off. I was only alerted to this when the kickstart suddenly started hitting the riders footrest even when folded up. The whole of the right side footrest hanger assembly including the exhaust ,rear brake pedal and footrest was pivotting around the broken frame gusset! My mate reckons it can be welded back up luckily. Watch out if you have one of these models.

Thanks Michael. My point is with these old bikes :if a new problem arises, don't just ignore it. I know most on here are experienced bikers but not all may be!

Japanese tube guages may not be as thick as earlier British frame tubing and the Brits use of lugs to join the tubes. The Japanese 'bird sh!te' welding and thin finishing coatings can lead to rusting joints. If the tube drain holes have also been neglected, then the tubes can rust through from the inside. The old "Caveat emptor!" applies.

My regards, Bill

Yes indeedy Bill. The “tracker project “ frame had a severe case of the above. Took me quite some time with the tig welder to get the frame back to an acceptable state. Quite satisfying once done though. 👍👍

The frame had previously been powder coated so the drain might well have been blocked. I've had a Superdream and XBR500 with rotted out swingarms -probably caused by battery acid but I can't ever recall having a frame problem through corrosion rather than accident damage. Agree with Bill's assessment that Brit frames do look to be of stronger construction.

My tracker frame was absolutely wafer thin in places, just through general neglect I think. It had been hammerrite’d over about three times I’d say. Proper sorry state I’ve gotta say. I had it blasted to expose all the “holes” then once it was bare metal I set about tig’in up the rotten bits. Like I say, quite frustrating but very satisfying once finished. As a couple of the recent  photos show, now it’s all been sprayed up it looks as good as new. Let us know how you get on with the RS Martin 🤞
Cheers, Michael

Well I've SORNed it today due to the present crisis. Usually keep it taxed 12 months of the year but I can't get it to my mate's for welding until the restrictions are lifted.
