GN250 still not on the road!
« on: July 25, 2016, 08:00:55 PM »
Hi all,

Still on the GN250 .. . Barely get time to do anything with my new jobs taking 6 days a week up, however it is in a garage im working in.

Quick update, still couldn't jet it right - New problem is I blew the CDI up. I left the ignition on and it started smoking and melting. I bought a new CDI and still no spark so we made a new ignition loom up quick and got spark. However the cdi soon gets hot, so we made another ignition loom and the coil started to get hot? Very baffled and stumped, I spoke to someone about it and they suggested putting in a transistor? My electrics is very very basic and when I say we made a new loom up I mean I merely helped a very experienced mechanics boss. This bike and another bike I have were wired up by a specialist electrician and they have a tendency to blow up CDI and coils. Very confusing and stressful!

Any help would be much appreciated!

have you chacked the running voltage of the bike to make sure its not overcharging? suzuki regulator rectifiers have been problematic in the past, dont know if the gn is new enough to have evaded this problem, but its worth getting a multimeter and checking the voltage with the engine off and again with it running at tickover and again at higher revs. static it shout be round 13v, running it shouldnt be more than 14.5-15volts. altrnatively, its also worth making sure all your earths are clean and tightened up and finally, make sure that the reg rec is securely bolted to the frame well earthed and if possible the ignition too. finally, dont leave it standing with the ignition turned on if its not running.

I think the reg rec is ok, Ill look up how to test it. Earths and connects are good, theres not much to it and ive been over it a million times and even made two different ignition looms

I cant do any running tests because the coil and/or the cdi gets too hot, hot within seconds. So I don't trust it

We just cant figure out why theyre getting hot? Ive just bought a GN250 wiring loom (Yes I probably should have just done that first .. .) so ill plug that in and go over it.
