Honda FX650 Vigor/SLR Side Stand Bolt
« on: January 03, 2015, 05:45:50 PM »
I need to replace the side stand bolt on my bike but see that it is impossible to remove the bolt while the footrest hanger plate is in place.
Does this mean that I have to competely remove the swing arm bolt or can I gain enough space by simply slackening off the swing arm bolt nut and easing the bolt in by an inch or so? Does this make sense? Thanks everyone and Happy New Year.

Hi. Just went out to the shed to look at the set-up on my own Vigor, and I can't see an access problem. Loosening off the left footrest hanger shouldn't be any problem anyway. I'll be stripping the whole back end out of mine later in the week as I want to clean all the mono shock bearings and give it all a clean up, so i'll let you know if I encounter the same problem. What I can say, is that almost every fastener I've encountered so far has been seized solid, esp the exhaust mountings   >:(

Hi, thanks for your comments.
It was just that the left hand hanger is held in place by the swing arm pivot bolt and it is the head end of the bolt on the left hand side of the bike. Thus the nut on the other side needs to be removed and I'm not sure whether I can then just ease the bolt in a tad to free up enough space on the left hand side, or whether I need to dismantle the whole swing arm.
I will be interested to hear how you get on with all your seized fixings.
Al the best, Tony.

Your sidestand problem has been playing on my mind, so I've just removed mine off the Vigor. First I used one of the most useful tools I've ever bought, a spring puller, to remove the return spring. It's just a simple t-bar, with a hook at the other end. They cost pennies. I then removed the 8mm bolt that holds on the sidestand switch in place and moved it out of the way. 14mm nut off the back, then 14mm bolt off the front. I didn't have any clearance problems, except I had to use a ring spanner, as there wasn't room for a socket, but the sidestand came away without disturbing anything else. I don't know if an SLR is the same set up. I hope this helps rather than causes any futher frustration  :)

Thanks again Timbo. I'm amazed that there's sufficient room for the bolt to come out without fouling the plate.  I have been awaiting the arrival of a new bolt oherwise I would have discovered that for myself! It just goes to show that its better not to think too much but to just get on with it. Hope your work goes without a hitch.

Hello again. To be honest, that is the only bit that's gone smoothly. I decided to take the shock out to clean it up and fit one of those neoprene tubes to protect it in the future, as if it goes, your looking at 300! The big down side of monoshocks is the the linkage bearings, which if not cleaned and greased every few years, seize to buggery, as mine are. Even heat didn't work, so its hacksaws and angle grinder for a couple of them, and salvage what I can. Such is life, stick to twin shocks!

There was a lot of play on my Vigor side stand. An easy fix was to put in a very thin washer to take up the play. An easy fix I've used a few times.
