Gear changing - None above 2nd
« on: November 07, 2013, 02:22:04 PM »
Hi all,

I've just recently finished building a bike and it finally came to the part to start it and test run it. Only been 14 months!!

However when testing it, it will select 1st gear fine and go back to neutral but it will not select 2nd for some reason.
Any ideas?

Also rocker cover seems to be leaking oil. It had a total top end rebuild and whole bike got new gaskets
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mackenzie

Yes,I am aware.

Sorry, I'm basically saying I thought that was a very good thought. The last line was just a daft joke, not taking a dig. I'm on your side!

It probably just came across wrong. Plus the site filter is paranoid. I actually wrote the word spa rse. But the filter removed the a rse bit!

Its a Suzuki GN250.

Sorry I didnt think the bike model would be such a major part of info. Most mechanics work on the same basic functions and principles no?

Great comedy tho

True, but (some) kawasakis have a little device to supposedly help find neutral. In my experience it just helps you find neutral if you forget and try short shift from first to second. I believe the basic principle is a steel peg and a light spring. This needs a certain amount of centrifugal force before it releases and lets you engage second gear. The idea being that, at a standstill, you can only ever find neutral from first. I think that's the basic idea?

The comedy is extra charge!  ;)

and some bikes are more prone to gearbox woes than other. i see little similarity between my suzuki gearbox and my bsa!!!

when you put the gearchange shaft in through the casings, did you centralise the selector fork on the selector drum?. im assuming also that the gear lever or any of its linkages arent fouling on the frame or other parts of the bike?

Is it refitted to the bike? I rebuilt a Honda bottom end once and had this problem trying to test it on the bench. It was OK when the engine was running, the gears wouldn't mesh if you turned them slowly.
